Jeroen Krabbé was born in Amsterdam in 1944, surrounded by pigments and canvases. His father and grandfather were professional painters. Art was therefore not a choice but an inherited language he has never fully abandoned.
In 1977, his career took on a whole new scale. Paul Verhoeven cast him in Soldaat van Oranje, and that war drama took him beyond the borders of the Netherlands. The camera loved his square jaw and a gaze that could shift from tenderness to menace in a second.
Painting is his true calling.
But movies pay the bills and feed the ego. After the success of The Fourth Man in 1983, agents in Los Angeles began knocking on his door insistently. Krabbé took on the challenge without knowing that he would become the face of refined evil on the big screen for nearly two decades.
In 1987 he played General Georgi Koskov in The Living Daylights. That traitor role in the James Bond universe gave him instant global visibility. He earned a salary that allowed him to buy a larger painting studio in the center of his hometown, where he could retreat between shoots.
And the typecasting soon followed.
During the 1990s he appeared in major productions such as The Fugitive in 1993. There he played Dr. Charles Nichols, and his clash with Harrison Ford is one of the film's peak moments. But Krabbé felt he needed to tell his own stories from behind the camera to keep from getting bored.
In 1998 he made the leap into directing with Left Luggage. The film won the Blue Angel at the Berlin Film Festival and showed that his storytelling vision was far more intimate than his antagonist roles suggested. He wasn't after easy applause but rather explored Jewish identity in 1970s Antwerp with sharp restraint.
Krabbé never stopped producing paintings while filming across half the world. In 2008 the Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle dedicated a major retrospective to him, confirming his status as a serious artist beyond his fame. His paintings are vibrant landscapes that have little in common with the darkness of his on-screen characters.
In 2022 he appeared in the series Immortal, playing a tycoon with family secrets, a role that marked his return to high-budget television drama. He still works with almost military discipline. He only accepts projects if the shooting schedule doesn't interfere with his hours of natural light so he can work in his painting studio.
The pace doesn't let up.
In 2024 he took on the role of King Willem-Alexander in the series Máxima, bringing the institutional gravitas the biographical story needed. The production was shot in various European locations with a budget exceeding ten million euros. Krabbé finished his studio scenes in less than three weeks of actual work.
