Jessica De Gouw left Perth in 2012 with a one-way ticket and a clenched jaw. She wasn't after the quick fame of the Sydney red carpets. She wanted the grit of Los Angeles.
A few weeks after landing, she won the role of Helena Bertinelli in Arrow. It was a stroke of luck. But luck runs out fast without technique behind it. On that Vancouver set, she learned to handle crossbows and to endure sixteen-hour days in the Canadian rain.
Audiences on the American network accepted her as The Huntress, but she was already looking toward London.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2013, NBC cast her as Mina Murray in Dracula. She worked alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers on a production with a huge budget and a script too dense for general television. The series lasted only ten episodes.
That commercial failure gave her the profile she was looking for.
De Gouw broke free of being typecast as a superheroine to embrace period drama. In 2016 she stepped into the role of Elizabeth Hawkes for the series Underground. There, the camera stopped focusing on her looks and sought a much darker, more political gaze. Because the actress understood that her career depended on moving away from flat characters.
Before shooting each scene, she usually studies the historical context with almost academic discipline. So her time in Australian independent film was a logical evolution.
She returned to Australia to shoot The Secrets She Keeps in 2020. Playing Meghan Shaughnessy meant a complete change of register, since the script demanded a vulnerability that bordered on pathetic. Critics noticed her outside the leather catsuits for the first time in years.
In 2023, she shot The Couple Next Door for Channel 4 and Starz. The series explores desire and betrayal in a suffocating suburban setting. De Gouw plays Becka, a woman who handles silences better than long dialogue.
That same year, she appeared in The Artful Dodger as Lady Jane Fox. It was a period shoot that showed her stage presence doesn't need gimmicks to carry the weight of a supporting storyline. But her main interest still lies in stories that unsettle the average viewer.
The production of the second season of her thriller series in 2022 wrapped with a budget of 10 million Australian dollars.
