Jessie Buckley did not win that BBC competition in 2008. She finished second on a talent show, and that defeat became the best script she could have written for her own life. Because after the noise of British television, she decided she did not want to be a disposable star.
Before becoming a household name, she enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She did so because she needed a solid foundation to move away from the musical-singer image the industry had reserved for her. But her plan wasn't just to study; it was to disappear so she could reappear with a different face.
Risk is her only fuel.
In 2018, she made Wild Rose, and audiences realized her voice wasn't a studio trick. She played a single mother from Glasgow who dreams of Nashville. But she did it with a rawness that avoided any trace of sappiness. Almost all of the songs in the film were recorded by her own voice, without relying on vocal doubles.
In 2019, she appeared in the series Chernobyl. Her role was supporting (the wife of a condemned firefighter), but she made the horror of radiation felt through her eyes alone. She didn't need big dialogue to convey the collapse of a world. Casting directors across the globe soon began calling her for roles where silence speaks louder than words.
Charlie Kaufman cast her in 2020 to star in I’m Thinking of Ending Things. The shoot was complex and psychologically exhausting. Buckley spent hours analyzing every line of a script whose logic kept shifting. The result was a performance that many critics called impossible given its technical demands.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2021, she worked on The Lost Daughter alongside Olivia Colman. Playing the younger version of the same character earned her first Oscar nomination. But she didn't travel to Los Angeles with a celebrity mindset. For Buckley, the job ends when the director yells cut for the last time.
In 2022, she starred in Men under the direction of Alex Garland. It was a $8 million production that divided audiences with its visual violence and heavy symbolism. She accepted the role because it allowed her to explore trauma from a physical, almost visceral perspective.
She has no interest in superhero franchises.
In 2024, she premiered Wicked Little Letters, proving she can also handle dark comedy with surgical precision. She shared the screen again with Colman in a story based on real events about anonymous letters in interwar England. Filming took place mainly on the streets of Arundel and Worthing during the autumn.
In 2025, she stars in The Bride!, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The production moved to New York to shoot the main scenes in various urban locations. The film's total budget exceeded $said 80 million.
