Ji Chang-wook didn't land on television by accident. His training in performing arts at Dankook University gave him a technical foundation that many of his contemporaries lacked when they entered the industry. In 2008, he made his film debut in Sleeping Beauty. It was a small role, but it showed him that his face worked under the big-screen spotlight.
In 2010, he starred in Smile Again, playing a speed skater. He trained on ice for four months so that the close-up shots would look believable and he wouldn't have to rely on deceptive editing tricks.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, he starred in the period drama Warrior Baek Dong-soo. There he learned to handle a sword with a precision that caught the attention of Seoul's most demanding casting directors. But massive international success would not arrive until a couple of years later.
In 2013, he filmed Empress Ki alongside Ha Ji-won. This production, spanning 51 episodes, required eighteen-hour workdays on outdoor sets with subzero temperatures (sometimes reaching minus ten degrees in the mountains). His portrayal of a weak, emotionally broken emperor pulled him out of the conventional leading-man mold.
In 2014, Healer premiered. In this series, he performed most of his stunt scenes, leaping between rooftops and running through narrow alleys. That earned him a reputation as a physical actor, and the constant impact of the jumps eventually took a toll on his back and joints.
But the body has clear limits.
In 2016, he filmed The K2 and said in several interviews that it would be his last pure action project. The extreme exhaustion caused by the mercenary training led him to consider a change of direction in his career choices, because he didn't want his career to depend exclusively on his physical condition.
In 2017, he put his career on hold to fulfill his mandatory military service. He returned in 2019 with a different mindset and sought projects that moved away from choreographed fights and gunfire. In 2020, he premiered the comedy Backstreet Rookie, and in 2022 he starred in the fantasy musical The Sound of Magic for Netflix.
On this latest project, he returned to his career as a professional singer. It's a skill he had honed years earlier in the theaters of Daehangno, and it lets him control the rhythm of his dialogue in a much more organic way than other actors of his generation.
In 2023, he switched gears with The Worst of Evil. He played an undercover cop infiltrating a criminal organization and returned to violence, but from a much rawer and less stylized angle than in his earlier work. The series required six months of filming at industrial locations in South Korea.
The industry no longer sees him as just a pretty face.
In 2024, he appeared in the movie Revolver, sharing the billing with Jeon Do-yeon. His schedule for 2025 includes the series Sculpture City, whose production contract stipulates a total exclusivity clause that blocks any other advertising commitments during the main filming period.
