In the summer of 2017, Jimmy Donaldson spent forty hours locked in his bedroom counting from one to one hundred thousand in front of a webcam. He was nineteen, with deep dark circles and back pain. That raw recording beat the platform's retention expectations.
Nobody anticipated what would come next.
In 2012, Donaldson launched his first channel under the alias MrBeast6000 from his home in Greenville, North Carolina. For five years he recorded video game sessions with a broken microphone and poor lighting. He wasn't chasing formal prestige or understood traditional staging.
Because his real obsession was the math of the viewer. He spent full days with friends analyzing thumbnails, cut rhythms and attention drop-offs second by second. Every frame had to earn its place or it would vanish in the digital edit.
In 2018, he decided to hand his first 10,000 dollars to a food delivery driver after persuading a coupon company to fund the test. The gesture seemed like an act of charity, but it followed a relentless production logic in which every dollar invested had to multiply the views on screen.
Before long, that premise grew into a factory with dozens of editors, carpenters and industrial warehouses converted into sets. Donaldson didn't shoot by the conventional directing playbook. His pieces cut out dead time, saturated the color palette and sped up the editing until they sustained a relentless pace.
The algorithm called the shots over the script.
In November 2021, he built a full-scale replica inspired by the South Korean series for his competition Squid Game: The Challenge. The shoot required a direct outlay of 3.5 million dollars for set construction and prizes. He gathered 456 anonymous participants in warehouses that recreated the original series' sets in meticulous detail.
The industry's old guard looked at him with distance. For directors trained in classic schools, it seemed like a funfair of giveaways designed for mobile phones. But its viewing numbers outperformed the star-studded premieres on American broadcast television.
So a deal with the platforms was inevitable. In March 2024, he signed a contract with Amazon MGM Studios to front the format Beast Games. The company gave him creative control and a budget of more than 100 million dollars.
The shoot drew a thousand hopefuls to Toronto to compete for five million dollars in cash. The ambition overwhelmed the medical infrastructure and the crew's shooting schedule. Several contestants took the set's conditions to court over food supply failures, injuries during physical challenges and grueling workdays.
And the machine allowed no pauses.
The first season debuted in December 2024 across ten episodes with a deployment of seven hundred simultaneous cameras. For the second installment, aired in January 2026, the production cut the cap to two hundred participants to contain the logistical risks on set.
The tower structure for the pilot episode alone consumed 15 million dollars and fourteen weeks of heavy carpentry. No independent studio operates on those margins to start a shoot.

Things you probably didn't know about Jimmy Donaldson
I want to be the biggest YouTube channel ever. Not even for my ego. It just gives me something to strive for, to get out of bed and grind for. But it’s also just vanity.
I don't party. I barely have friends. And there is a risk: I look back when I'm 50 and I'm like, 'Damn, I literally only did that one thing and nothing else.'
I'm borrowing money. That's how little money I have. Technically, everyone watching this video has more money than me in their bank account if you subtract the equity value of my company, which doesn't buy me McDonald's in the morning.
