From technology consulting to the film set

Jin Ki-joo didn't pursue acting as a desperate last resort or as a childhood daydream. Before stepping onto a set, she worked as a systems consultant at Samsung SDS and spent some time as a journalist for a subsidiary of the SBS network. She had a stable life and an enviable salary for any young Korean woman at 2014.

But she decided to give it all up for a modeling contest.

Her entry into the industry came late compared with other stars who start as teenagers. In 2015, she made her debut in the series Second 20s with a supporting role that barely hinted at her ability to hold a close-up. That was the start of a climb built on logic and physical effort rather than the luck of a fortunate casting call.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2018, her name started to buzz thanks to Little Forest. In this adaptation of the manga of the same name, she plays the protagonist's friend and manages to make her character more than a mere shadow. Jin has that rare quality of seeming like a real person amid fictions that sometimes lean too heavily on artifice. She earned a Best New Actress nomination at the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards for this work.

Silence and Suspense on the Big Screen

In 2021, she took on the technical challenge of starring in Midnight. She plays a deaf woman who is hunted by a serial killer through the streets of Seoul. The shoot was a physical ordeal because of the constant running scenes and the total absence of spoken dialogue for her character. She had to learn sign language and rely fully on her facial expressions to convey pure terror.

The film was sold to eleven countries before its official release.

That same year, she appeared in Come and Hug Me, where her performance as an actress suffering from post-traumatic stress earned her recognition from specialized critics. The script demanded constant fragility, which she balanced with a hard, steady gaze. It's not common to find performers who handle silence so well without falling into the most classic Korean melodrama.

In 2023, she starred in My Perfect Stranger for the KBS2 network. The story blends time travel with a serial murder plot in a rural town during 1987. Filming stretched over several winter months and required complete control of the emotional nuances to keep hold of a fragmented narrative.

The Weight of Big-Budget Productions

In 2024, the actress immersed herself in the ambitious production of Uncle Samsik. It is Song Kang-ho's first television series, and she plays Joo Yeo-jin, a female character with a strong presence in a dense, male-driven political plot. The project had an estimated budget of 40,000 million won for its first sixteen episodes.

Her work method steers clear of constant improvisation. In technical interviews, she often mentions that her background as an engineer helps her break down scripts in an almost mathematical way. She prefers to understand the structure of a scene before looking for the character's emotion. As a result, her creative process is more like that of an architect than a bohemian artist.

On set, she is known for her extreme punctuality and for studying scripts down to the last technical detail of the lighting. During the production of My Perfect Stranger in 2023, she spent more than ten hours a day under artificial rain to complete a single transition sequence.
