Joel McKinnon Miller arrived in Los Angeles in 1991 with little more than classical opera training and a couple of suitcases. He wasn't aiming to be a poster star or make the cover of teen magazines. His goal was steady work and the anonymity of a character actor.
And he achieved it almost immediately.
Before stepping onto Hollywood sets, he trained at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he studied acting and classical singing. That technical foundation gave him the physical control he would later bring to his funniest characters. In 1991, he joined The Acting Company and toured the United States performing classics by Shakespeare and Molière. This stage.
Throughout the 1990s, his face became familiar to casting directors. He appeared in The Truman Show in 1998, playing one of the guards on the film set. But it wasn't until cable television arrived that his career found a solid anchor.
In 2006, he signed on to play Don Embry in Big Love. In this HBO production, he played the main character's best friend and business partner across 53 episodes. His portrayal of a loyal man caught in the complexities of a polygamous community earned him a reputation as a reliable actor within the industry. The drama suited him well, but audiences didn't yet know his gift for pure farce.
In 2013, he received the script for a new police comedy set in New York. The role of Norm Scully in Brooklyn Nine-Nine seemed at first like a peripheral part meant to fill out the background of the precinct. The reality was very different. Miller turned an inept detective who loved junk food into a fundamental pillar of the series over 153 episodes.
Because Miller understands that humor comes not from the joke but from the reaction. His chemistry with Dirk Blocker was so obvious that the writers ended up creating a universe of their own for both characters. During filming of the series, which ended in 2021, Miller showed that the precision of a Swiss watch is necessary for a physical gag to work.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite his success in comedy, he never abandoned dramatic or crime projects. In 2022, he appeared in the miniseries The Staircase and in Candy, where he revived the sober tone that defines him outside of sitcoms. In these productions, he moved away from laughs to explore darker, more restrained characters.
Theater was always his safety net.
He often returns to the stage when production schedules allow. In 2023, he joined the cast of The Gilded Age for its second season, playing a police chief in 19th-century New York. The role marked a return to period dramas, where his imposing physical presence fits naturally into Victorian sets.
In 2024, he appeared in the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, reprising his role as Dr. Slaavin. His career has steered clear of major scandals and stays focused on the technical craft of every take. He currently lives in Los Angeles and maintains close ties to arts support organizations in Minnesota. The contract for his most recent television appearance was closed under standard union terms for actors.
