Jorge Javier Vázquez didn't come to Madrid to make friends or ask for permission. He earned a degree in Hispanic Philology at the University of Barcelona and traded the humble San Roque neighborhood for a newsroom full of ashtrays at the magazine Pronto.

For years he toiled away writing society gossip by the piece. He knew how to listen, stay quiet and sum up a marital crisis in one dry sentence.

In 1997, he made his on-screen debut alongside Ana Rosa Quintana in Sabor a ti. He displayed a corrosive humor that caught industry professionals of the time off guard. He accepted the role of a sharp-tongued jester, because he understood before anyone else how the live gossip industry worked.

And it worked.

From Tomato to Perpetual Studio

In March 2003, he launched Aquí hay tomate alongside Carmen Alcayde. It was raw television: rapid-fire editing, screeching sound effects and a voiceover that demolished reputations over lunchtime.

The show dominated the competition for five years until a cascade of court rulings forced its cancellation in 2008.

Many considered his career over after that abrupt cancellation.

But in April 2009, Sálvame was born. What started as a nightly debate to fill gaps in the schedule turned into a daily four-hour live meat grinder. The host handled other people's misery and insults with methodical detachment. He once held more than 25 hours a week on screen without losing his grip on the rundown or his ability to shake up the national political agenda between commercial breaks.

He turned the studio into a farce where contributors ran for cover while he snacked in front of three million viewers.

Theater Spotlights and Literary Debts

The financial muscle of commercial television funded his stage obsessions. Fascinated by the cuplé, revue and classic texts, he decided to step onto the stage without a safety net.

In 2014, he invested his own capital to stage the musical La llamada at the Teatro Lara. The commercial venture was a resounding success.

The following year, he made his debut as an actor and singer in Iba en serio, an autobiographical stage show directed by Juan Carlos Rubio. Traditional critics received the project coldly, but theaters in the provinces sold out performance after performance. In 2018, he repeated the formula with Grandes éxitos, and in 2020 he premiered Desmontando a Séneca, which mixed philosophical reflections with dressing-room anecdotes.

Acting was never enough for him.

His confessional novels sold thousands of copies in bookstores. In 2022, he published Antes del olvido, a raw account written after the death of Mila Ximénez, in which he detailed his struggles with alcohol and his visits to the psychiatrist.

The Blackout and the Return to the Mud

In May 2023, Mediaset's new management abruptly canceled Sálvame. The decision ended fourteen years of uninterrupted dominance in the afternoon slot.

The upheaval coincided with a medical leave for mental health reasons that kept him out of the spotlight for months.

In September 2023, he returned with Cuentos chinos to go head-to-head with El hormiguero in the late-night slot. The show lasted just ten episodes before being crushed with an average audience share of 7%, the worst flop of his professional career.

So he returned to the classic formulas of reality TV.

In 2024, he signed a contract extension with the media group through 2027, and went on to host Supervivientes, the afternoon premiere of El diario de Jorge and the main galas of Gran Hermano.

His theater company closed its 2023 accounts with equity valued at 2.3 million euros.
