Josephine Park didn't need big gimmicks to convince the Danish film industry that she was the missing piece on the board. She graduated from the Aarhus Theatre School in 2014. From that moment on, she built a career that steers clear of empty exposure and focuses on the raw edge of Nordic realism.
In 2018, the project that broke her anonymity arrived. The series Doggystyle earned her the Robert Award for Best Supporting Actress two years in a row. That was no coincidence. Local critics began to see in her a rare ability to hold uncomfortable silences without losing the viewer's attention.
And the industry took notice.
Park never went after the conventional heroine role. Her characters tend to be broken, or at least badly cracked by reality. In 2020, she took part in The Investigation, a production that dissected the real case of journalist Kim Wall's murder. That supporting but suffocating role put her name on the desks of European casting directors.
Her big breakthrough beyond Danish borders came in 2022 with the premiere of Baby Fever on Netflix. The series tackles artificial insemination from a perspective that blends dark comedy with ethical drama. Park plays Nana, a fertility doctor who inseminates herself with the sperm of her ex-boyfriend while drunk.
She's a difficult character to love.
But she makes audiences empathize with a woman who makes disastrous decisions one after another. So the streaming platform renewed the series for a second season, filmed during 2023. In these new episodes, Park digs deeper into lying as a way of life and avoids the easy caricature of the traditional romantic comedy.
Before filming, she reads the script looking for the seams of the character. Aesthetic perfection in front of the camera doesn't interest her. In the horror film Attachment in 2022, she explored psychological suspense within Orthodox Jewish culture. It was a risky bet that worked in genre film circuits across the continent.
During 2024, Park's career reached a new technical level with The Girl with the Needle. The film competed in the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival. In this period drama set after World War I, she plays a role that demands complete physical restraint. It is a dry, understated register that departs from her previous television work.
The film was acquired for international distribution by the Mubi streaming platform after its run at the French festival.
Success did not come right away. Before her big roles, she spent years in minor theater productions where the pay barely covered basic living costs in Copenhagen. But that stage gave her the tools to handle high-pressure shoots without blinking. So her presence in European art-house cinema stopped being a promise and became a financial reality for producers.
Filming of her next project for Danish national television wrapped in December 2024 with a budget of 4 million euros.
