Julia Foster wasn't seeking fame when she left her native Lewes in the late 1950s. She simply had a face the camera loved and a natural ability to seem vulnerable and cynical at the same time. In 1962, she landed a supporting role in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, and her life changed completely.
That debut was no accident of fate. British New Wave directors were looking for realism, and she delivered it effortlessly. But her true commercial breakthrough came in 1966, when she played Gilda in Alfie opposite Michael Caine.
That shoot cost just over 500,000 pounds.
And it worked.
Foster turned down the easy road of big Hollywood productions because she preferred the control that theater gave her. So she spent much of the 1970s and 1980s alternating British television series with plays in London's West End.
In 1969, she starred in Notes on a Love Affair, and critics praised her ability to carry complex dialogue. She had no interest in being a poster star. She preferred working with playwrights who demanded real physical and mental effort in every performance (something the films of the era rarely offered women).
Her marriage to veterinarian Bruce Fogle in 1970 gave her a stability few actresses of her generation managed to maintain. For her, cinema was a craft, not a religion.
There was no turning back.
During the 1990s, her screen presence declined sharply. She focused on raising her children and on carefully selected stage projects that would keep her close to home in London. But her name still carried weight in BBC casting offices.
The priority was something else.
Decades later, the industry came knocking on her door again. In 2016, she appeared in the film version of Dad's Army, playing Dolly Godfrey. It was a reminder that her comic timing was still intact despite the passing years.
In 2022, the series The Crown cast her for its fifth season. She played Lady Susan Hussey and brought the restraint needed for a production that closely examines the British monarchy. That year, the series filmed on location in Surrey and London with a per-episode budget that exceeded 10 million dollars.
The production of The Crown used Sony Venice cameras to achieve that very specific cinematic texture in the palace scenes.
