Jun Fukuyama was born in Hiroshima in 1978. He got into Japanese voice acting almost by chance, when he tried to impress a girl who wanted to be a voice actress. She never made it. He ended up becoming one of the most lucrative figures in the Asian market.
In 1997, he debuted in Road Rover in a small supporting role. That first paycheck barely covered his transportation costs in an industry that pays by rigid experience tiers. Still, his effortless vocal range caught the attention of casting directors of the time.
In 1998, he landed his first leading role in Musa no Tenshi.
No one suspected that the young man from Osaka would end up dominating the darkest and funniest registers of Japanese animation. The truth is his early years were low-key, marked by supporting roles that barely demanded any vocal effort. It was a period of technical learning in which Fukuyama refined a diction that would later become his greatest financial asset.
In 2006, the industry changed for him when he voiced Lelouch Lamperouge in Code Geass. The role demanded constant shifts between the charismatic student and the ruthless tyrant. He won Best Male Lead at the first Seiyu Awards in 2007 for this performance.
And the gamble paid off.
Fukuyama didn't just repeat the tragic antihero mold. In 2008, he voiced Lawrence in Spice and Wolf and showed he could carry dense dialogue about economics and romance without losing momentum. Japanese audiences began to see his style as flexible, one that escaped the usual labels recording studios liked to put on voice actors.
In 2011, he played Rin Okumura in Blue Exorcist (an impulsive teenager) and almost immediately took on much more mature roles in historical series. His ability to switch between styles allowed him to work on more than fifteen projects a year throughout the following decade.
After years tied to agencies such as Baobab or Axlone, in 2018 he decided to found his own company with Shinnosuke Tachibana. They named it Black Ship. The move aimed for greater control over his schedule and over how new talent was managed in a market crowded with young voices.
Running a company didn't pull him away from the microphone.
In 2015, he played Koro-sensei in Assassination Classroom. It was a vocal contortion exercise in which he shifted from mocking laughter to teacherly authority in a matter of seconds. The high-pitched register he used for the yellow teacher contrasted with the depth of his earlier work in the thriller genre.
In 2021, they appeared in Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song, voicing Matsumoto, an artificial intelligence cube who spoke at a frantic pace. The script required them to fire off technical lines with almost no pauses to breathe. In 2023, they voiced King again in the continuation of The Seven Deadly Sins.
During 2024, his work focused on productions such as Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga. The Japanese voice acting market generates billions of yen every year, and Fukuyama averages ten projects per season. In 2025, he signed exclusive contracts for several high-budget video game productions in Tokyo.
His contract with Black Ship requires him to oversee auditions for new recruits every quarter.
