Kang Han-na spent years studying theater at Chung-Ang University before anyone knew her name. She wasn't chasing quick applause. During her training, she appeared in dozens of independent short films to understand how a film camera works.
In 2009, she filmed Last Homecoming. It was her first real foray into the industry, but her breakout moment would take another five years to arrive.
Everything changed with one bold decision.
In 2015, she accepted the role of Ka-hee in the film Empire of Lust. The script called for scenes with very high sexual content that many actresses of her generation turned down out of fear of being typecast. She decided that the character's dramatic weight was worth the physical exposure.
Korean critics were divided over the film. But no one could deny that her portrayal of a woman driven by revenge in the Joseon era had an unusual intensity. That role gave her the visibility she needed to move into big-budget television.
In 2016, she played Princess Hwangbo Yeon-hwa in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. She wasn't the lead. But her ability to come across as icy and calculating on camera stole scenes from the series' main stars.
And that's where the rise began.
Unlike other actors who get stuck in historical drama, she moved into comedy and modern romance with astonishing ease. In 2018, she appeared in Familiar Wife with a far more urban style.
Because Kang Han-na doesn't just act. Between 2020 and 2021, she hosted the radio show Kang Han-na’s Volume Up every night. That two-hour daily live broadcast shaped her diction and her closeness with Korean audiences.
The year 2020 marked her massive international breakthrough thanks to Start-Up. She played Won In-jae, a businesswoman who gives up her privileges to start from scratch. Audiences connected with her apparent coolness, which concealed a carefully crafted vulnerability.
In 2022, she returned to period drama with Bloody Heart. She won the Excellence Award at that year's KBS Drama Awards for her role as Yoo Jung. The shoot was physically demanding due to the outdoor locations and the weight of traditional Korean costumes.
But she prefers the frantic pace.
In 2024, she premiered Frankly Speaking alongside Go Kyung-pyo. In this production, she played a writer for variety shows. The role calls for a very specific comedic sensibility built on rapid-fire dialogue.
Her contracts often include strict clauses on how celebrities must prepare their roles in advance. She doesn't improvise. On the set of My Roommate Is a Gumiho in 2021, she used her meal breaks to rehearse the tone of her lines so she wouldn't lose the nuance of the fantasy comedy.
The industry values her ability to nail long takes. During the production of Frankly Speaking in 2024, the crew noted that she rarely needed to redo a scene because of line errors. Her academic training at Chung-Ang remains her most important work tool.
The distribution deal for her 2024 series was closed with Netflix for global streaming in more than 190 countries.
