Kang So-yeon doesn't fit the usual mold of the South Korean industry. In 2011 she tried to break into the charts with the K-pop group WE under the stage name Rosie. But the project didn't take off. That hip-hop group quickly disappeared from screens and pushed her to find an alternative path far from traditional music stages.
She opened her own gym in Seoul called HitFit Boxing and began training like a professional. Her physique moved away from the fragility that talent agencies demanded of women at the time. She preferred the power of a well-executed punch over the extreme diets of talent academies.
And the change was her salvation.
Rather than hiding her muscles, she decided to build on them through sports. She practiced jiu-jitsu, swimming and golf while running her business. This stretch of media anonymity lasted nearly a decade. Then television came knocking with a format that was looking for exactly the athletic energy she had already mastered.
In 2021 Netflix premiered Single's Inferno. The show was an international hit, and she stood out for a maturity that clashed with the usual script of dating shows. She reached one million social media followers in just a few weeks. Her time on the island was not only about romance. Viewers outside South Korea connected with her healthy lifestyle.
That exhibition allowed her to return to her career as an actress and host. In 2022, she signed deals with sportswear brands looking for real-life profiles. She also took advantage of the momentum to release solo music, such as the single Loca Loca, although her public image was already far from that of a conventional singer.
The industry no longer saw her as a former idol.
Her career moved toward event management and high-performance modeling. In 2023 she made brief appearances in television dramas, but her main focus remained physical wellness. Her name began to be linked to competitions and extreme challenge shows where looks took a back seat to pure performance.
In 2024 she took part in the second season of Physical: 100. This time she wasn't looking for a partner but proving she could keep up with the pace of Olympic athletes and MMA fighters. Her early elimination did not affect her commercial relevance or her ability to attract international sponsors.
She remains active as an ambassador for golf and tennis tournaments in Asia. Her annual earnings depend more on her personal fitness brand than on her image rights as an actress. Monetizing her daily routines on digital platforms supports a business structure of her own, which she manages together with her family.
The HitFit Boxing gym still operates in the Gangnam district with a set monthly fee.
