Kazue Ikura wasn't chasing stardom when she started out in the 1980s. In 1982, she voiced minor characters in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross. It was a quiet apprenticeship in small recording booths where cigarette smoke was still legal.
Soon after came the role that defined her paycheck and her status.
In 1987, she agreed to play Kaori Makimura in City Hunter. It was not an easy role, as it demanded a shift from physical comedy to romantic drama in a matter of seconds. Japanese audiences quickly grew used to her energetic tone and her battle cries.
And the gamble paid off.
Ikura recorded hundreds of episodes and several TV movies over the course of a decade. Her voice became forever linked to the 100-ton hammer her character used to punish the protagonist. But she wanted to avoid being typecast in purely comedic roles.
In 1991, she took on the role of Ryunosuke Hibiki in Ranma 1/2. It was a highly demanding technical exercise. She had to sound like a woman forced to live as a man by her father's wishes.
She made audiences forget there was an actress behind the microphone.
In Japan, dubbing pay is based on level of experience rather than minutes of dialogue. So Ikura decided to diversify her roles to stay in the upper tier of the industry's pay scale.
In 1997, she joined the Sakura Wars franchise, playing Leni Milchstraße. The role allowed her to explore a cool detachment she had not shown in her earlier work. The success of the video game led to stage plays in which voice actors had to perform physically in front of a live audience.
In 2006, she had to cover for actress Ikue Otani as Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece. It lasted only a few months, but pressure from the series' fans was constant. Fans of Japanese animation are relentless about vocal changes to main characters.
She delivered the assignment without any fuss.
The truth is, Ikura has always preferred craft to personal glamour on the red carpet. In 2019, she revisited her most famous role in City Hunter Movie: Shinjuku Private Eyes. The production brought back much of the original cast to win over nostalgic fans who grew up with analog television.
In 2023, she returned to the dubbing studio to record City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust. The recording process used state-of-the-art condenser microphones under the technical supervision of Kenji Kodama.
The 2023 film earned more than 1 billion yen in its first three weeks at the Japanese box office.
