The rigor of theater in Multan

Khalid Butt was not after the spotlight when he began working in Multan's theater scene during the 1970s. Back then, television in Pakistan was a privilege for a few, and the stage was the only real space for learning the craft of acting. His training was purely physical and vocal (something that would show decades later in how he projected his voice in recording studios).

In 1978, he decided the local stage was too small for him, and he moved to Lahore to try his luck at PTV. The transition was not easy, since the industry demanded a very specific physical presence, which he made up for with impeccable technique. But his persistence eventually opened the doors of the offices where the casting for major national productions was decided.

Nobody handed him a single minute of glory.

His style moved away from the exaggerated performances that dominated the cinema of the era. He preferred restraint and the use of silence to build characters that audiences could recognize on the street. And that naturalness is precisely what allowed him to survive the shifts in trends that ended the careers of many of his contemporaries.

Conquering the small screen

His mass recognition came through supporting roles that often ended up stealing the spotlight from the leading stars. In productions such as Landa Bazar or Boota from Toba Tek Singh, he showed that the weight of a story does not always rest on the person with the most lines of dialogue. His ability to grasp the rhythm of comedy and drama alike made him an indispensable actor for directors of the old school.

He worked under the country's most demanding filmmakers and never complained about grueling outdoor shoot days. As a result, his name quickly became associated with technical reliability and respect for the original script. In 2000, he received the Pride of Performance award (one of the highest civilian honors in Pakistan) for his contribution to the performing arts after nearly thirty years of uninterrupted work.

And success didn't land him in easy roles.

Unlike other actors who were content to repeat the same register, Butt sought out projects that would challenge his own public image. He appeared in films such as Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay in 2016, where he explored much darker and more complex nuances. But he always kept a foot in television, because he understood it was the medium that kept him connected to the rural audience of his home province.

The Final Stand in the Mountains of Khaie

The final years of his life were marked by physical decline, which did not stop him from taking on major professional challenges. In 2023, he accepted the role of Durab Khan in the series Khaie, knowing that filming in the mountainous regions of northern Pakistan would be extremely hard on his health. The character was a relentless patriarch trapped in a web of family feuds and ancestral violence.

He shot his scenes under extreme temperatures and with limited mobility.

Many of his co-stars later recalled that Butt could barely walk between takes, yet he regained all his energy the moment the director yelled action. That total commitment became his artistic legacy, before the liver disease he suffered from worsened irreversibly during the first days of 2024. He did not want to retire despite the doctors' warnings, because work was his only way of making sense of existence.

His last on-screen appearance aired posthumously and made a deep impression on audiences because of the raw fragility in his gaze. On January 15, 2024, he died in Lahore at the age of 76, leaving a void in PTV productions that has been hard to fill. His body was taken to Multan for his final burial, fulfilling his wish to return to the place where everything had begun half a century earlier.

He died with five decades of work behind him.
