Kim Ji-seok debuted in 2001 as a member of a boy band called LEO. It was an absolute commercial flop. The group disappeared in less than a year, and he had to rethink his future away from the music stage so he wouldn't fade into obscurity.
And he decided to try his luck at acting.
In 2004, he landed a small role in the drama Among Agasshi. He wasn't seeking instant fame. Before filming, he accepted any supporting role to learn the craft and understand how a television set worked in South Korea.
But recognition took a while to arrive. For three years he appeared in minor productions without his name making the headlines of Seoul's entertainment press. In 2007, his luck changed thanks to Likeable or Not, a daily series that reached ratings above 40 percent.
It was his biggest ratings hit up to that point.
In 2010, he put his career on hold to complete mandatory military service. He returned in 2012 with the horror film Two Moons. But the project that truly changed the public's perception of him was not a fictional drama but an entertainment show.
In 2015, he joined the cast of Problematic Men. Audiences discovered an actor with a surprisingly sharp capacity for logical analysis. That intellectual profile allowed him to move away from conventional leading-man roles and take on scripts with greater psychological depth.
He shot Another Miss Oh in 2016. He played a lawyer with a chaotic love life. The series performed very well on the pay channel tvN and allowed him to show that he had mastered physical comedy without losing his elegance. His academic training in England also gave him a different air from other members of his generation.
The public didn't expect it.
In 2017, he played the tyrant Yeonsangun in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People. For this role, he received the Excellence Award at that year's MBC Drama Awards. It was a cold, violent performance that broke with his image as the kind man of variety shows.
In 2019, he took part in When the Camellia Blooms. He played Kang Jong-ryul, a famous baseball player who must deal with the consequences of his past decisions. The series took the Grand Prize at the Baeksang Arts Awards, and his performance was key to balancing the melodramatic tone of the story.
His real name is Kim Bo-seok.
In 2021, he starred in Monthly Magazine Home. The plot revolved around the real estate market and an obsession with private property. It was a light-toned project but laced with social criticism of contemporary South Korean economy. His presence helped the series hold the interest of younger viewers.
In 2023, he joined the cast of the film New Normal. This anthology feature explored horror in everyday situations of urban life. It was a production that steered clear of mainstream commercial circuits to focus on international genre film festivals.
In 2024, he played Lee Hyun-joo in the series The Midnight Studio, directed by Song Hyun-wook. Filming took place mostly on location in Seoul during the winter months, with workdays that exceeded 12 hours a day.
