In March 2018, Kobe Bryant took the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to accept a statuette that almost nobody in the film industry wanted to hand him. Animation purists eyed with suspicion the six-foot-seven man who intended to compete with the veterans of Burbank after twenty seasons winning championship rings with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for Dear Basketball and left half the audience in complete silence.

Nobody in Hollywood cared about his jump shot.

Bryant understood the rules of narrative storytelling long before he retired from the court. For years, he called directors such as Steven Spielberg or J.J. Abrams without warning to ask how they resolved a scene's climax or which lenses they chose to convey isolation on the big screen. He wasn't looking to pose on red carpets or finance other people's films out of vanity. He wanted to learn the craft from the pit.

The Notebook and the Obsession with Editing

In 2015, he produced the documentary Kobe Bryant's Muse with filmmaker Gotham Chopra for the Showtime network. That film avoided the usual tone of sports tributes to deliver a psychological autopsy shot in black and white. The subject spoke about his serious injuries and his defeats with an almost forensic coolness.

But his true control room was always in the tactical analysis sessions. He spent thousands of late nights breaking down game tapes second by second and applied that same mathematical obsession to the structure of his scripts.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2016, he founded Granity Studios in Costa Mesa. He turned down multimillion-dollar deals with the major media conglomerates to keep absolute ownership over every intellectual property. He convinced illustrator Glen Keane to direct his animated project and showed up at composer John Williams's offices with a raw recording of his farewell poem. Williams agreed to orchestrate the music because he saw in the former player the same manic discipline that large symphonic productions demand.

The Paper and Ink Factory in Newport Beach

Between 2018 and 2019, he produced and hosted Detail, a tactical analysis series for the ESPN+ platform. Bryant broke down active players the way a film critic analyzes a Martin Scorsese long take. He shut himself in a dark booth with no teleprompter and recorded the segments guided solely by notes written in pencil in school notebooks.

The work pace inside the studio was insane.

So he brought that same pace to the company's publishing catalog with the youth saga The Wizenard Series and the fantasy novel Epoca: The Tree of Ecrof. Bryant hired professional writers and independent animators to build his own imprint, where sports served as a pretext for exploring childhood anxiety and social isolation.

He oversaw every frame until the team was exhausted. He insisted that Dear Basketball be drawn entirely by hand on paper with graphite pencils to avoid the polished look of digital software. The production cost nearly four million dollars, which he paid for entirely out of his own pocket to ensure that the 5,000 individual sketches kept the rough texture of Keane's original line.

In January 2020, Granity Studios' archives held eighteen literary projects in the works, three animated series in preproduction and more than seven hundred hours of audiovisual material stored on high-fidelity magnetic tapes.

Quotes by Kobe Bryant

  • Get over yourself! 'Cause it's not about you, man. Like, okay, you feel embarrassed. You are not that important! Get over yourself! Right, like you are worried about how people may perceive you, and like you are walking around and it's embarrassing because you shot five air balls... Get over yourself.
