Kodi Smit-McPhee has a gaze that seems to look right through objects. He was born in Adelaide in 1996 and grew up in a family where acting was not an exotic option but a family trade. His father and sister were already familiar with film sets, but he was the one who projected a strange fragility in front of the camera from a very early age.
In 2009, he held his own against Viggo Mortensen in The Road. That Cormac McCarthy adaptation demanded a kid capable of conveying the despair of an apocalypse without slipping into cheap sentimentality. Smit-McPhee pulled it off at just twelve years old.
And it worked.
In 2010, he starred in Let Me In. The film was a difficult assignment because it had to recreate the magnetism of the original Swedish version, but the actor brought a melancholy of his own that won over American critics. That early stage avoided the usual pitfalls of child actors thanks to a very specific and dark selection of projects.
His move into major studio productions came in 2014 with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The shoot was complex because of the heavy use of motion-capture technology. But the real jump in scale happened in 2016, when he joined the mutant franchise.
He played Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse. The role required makeup sessions of nearly four hours to apply the blue prosthetics and the markings on the skin. He reprised the character in 2019 with Dark Phoenix, a shoot that suffered constant script changes and reshoots.
Silence was his best dialogue.
During those years of blockbusters, his lanky frame became his greatest asset. He has ankylosing spondylitis (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the spine), and this physical condition shapes the way he moves on screen. He doesn't try to hide his posture; instead, he builds it into the psychology of his characters.
In 2021, his career took a decisive turn with The Power of the Dog. Director Jane Campion cast him as Peter Gordon in a psychological Western that dismantled the myths of classic masculinity. He shared the screen with Benedict Cumberbatch, and the tension between them carried much of the film.
Critics were won over.
For that role, he won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in 2021. He also earned an Oscar nomination in 2022. It was the moment he stopped being a young promise and came to be seen as a character actor with an unusually precise command of gesture for his generation.
In 2022, he appeared in Elvis under the direction of Baz Luhrmann. He played Jimmie Rodgers Snow, and although his role was supporting, he provided the necessary counterpoint to the film's visual whirlwind. Smit-McPhee knows that in movies, knowing how to observe is sometimes more important than talking.
In 2024, he worked on the series Disclaimer, directed by Alfonso Cuarón for a streaming platform. The project was shot with a very rigorous cinematic aesthetic and demanded an extreme level of dramatic restraint from the actor. The production budget exceeded $……100 million due to the Mexican director's lengthy shooting schedule.
