Kristin Lehman spent eight years training for classical ballet at the National Ballet School of Canada. An ankle injury ended her dance aspirations before she turned twenty. That physical accident led her toward acting in Vancouver during the 1990s.
In 1995, she landed her first credited role in the series The Commish. There were no red carpets or big announcements. It marked the start of a period of technical training in fantasy and crime productions that defined her ability to hold the camera's gaze in close-up.
And it worked.
During that period she took part in projects such as Forever Knight and Poltergeist: The Legacy. On the latter, she played Kristin Adams from 1998 to 1999. Those shoots in Canada taught her that the industry valued technical precision above instant fame.
The American industry noticed her for her apparent coolness and controlled body language. In 2002, she joined the cast of Judging Amy to play Dr. Lily Reddicker. But it was her role in The Killing in 2011 that transformed her professional profile in the international market.
There, she brought Gwen Eaton to life. Her character was an ambitious political adviser who had to navigate an environment of corruption and moral gray areas. The AMC series demanded extreme naturalism, which Lehman delivered without resorting to the usual mannerisms of television drama.
Nobody expected that change of pace.
In 2013, she took on the lead role in Motive. She played Detective Angie Flynn over four seasons. But the most notable part of this project was not her performance in front of the camera. Lehman became involved in the production and began directing episodes of the series itself in 2015.
Her move into directing was no whim of an actress with clout. Lehman wanted total narrative control. In 2018, she took part in the science fiction blockbuster Altered Carbon, playing Miriam Bancroft. It was a complex role in a futuristic society where the body is just a disposable shell.
But her real interest was already in the director's chair. After wrapping her time on Motive, she devoted herself to directing episodes for big-budget dramas. She directed episodes of The Good Doctor and Firefly Lane, showing that she understood production timing better than many industry veterans.
In 2021, she worked under Mike Flanagan in the miniseries Midnight Mass for Netflix. She played Annie Flynn in a religious horror story that was praised for its psychological depth. It was one of her most restrained and mature performances.
The industry respects her for her rigor on set.
In recent years, her work has focused on directing series such as Snowpiercer and The Cleaning Lady in 2022. On these productions, she manages technical crews of more than a hundred people and multimillion-dollar budgets per episode. Her directing contract requires strict adherence to the daily shooting schedule.
Kristin Lehman lives in Vancouver with her family and keeps a low profile in the media. In 2024, she worked as a director and script consultant for various Canadian networks. The Directors Guild of Canada has recorded her professional activity without interruption for three decades.
