Laura de Carteret honed her craft on the stages of Toronto long before the camera turned to her face. She wasn't chasing quick fame or the red carpet. Her classical training in Canadian theater gave her a technical foundation that many method actors would envy.
Discipline was her only currency.
In 2004, she played Gretchen Wieners' mother in Mean Girls. It was a brief role, but that small appearance in a teen comedy became her entry into the collective imagination of an entire generation. She worked under Mark Waters on a set where improvisation was measured to the millimeter.
And her bet on sobriety paid off.
The industry often typecasts actresses based on their physical presence. De Carteret took on the challenge of playing complex maternal figures in series such as Seed between 2013 and 2014. There she brought to life Dr. Janet Enright. She made a character who could have been a cliché feel human and contradictory.
Because her ability to keep her composure in front of the camera is her greatest asset. In 2014, she joined the cast of The Strain, the series created by Guillermo del Toro. She played the wife of the CDC director in a setting of social collapse and biological vampires. Enduring long makeup and prosthetics sessions did not affect her performance in the most emotionally demanding scenes.
During 2018 and 2019, she appeared in The Handmaid’s Tale. Her role as Aunt Elizabeth demanded absolute coldness. Shooting in extreme weather conditions in Ontario was the norm during those filming days. The actress drew on that harsh environment to build a character who barely needed words to intimidate.
But it hasn't all been about being in the spotlight. De Carteret has combined her acting career with work as an acting coach and script consultant. She knows that a good script is half the job. That's why she has been involved in training new talent in the Canadian industry.
Television in her home country owes her half of its life.
In 2021, she worked on the series Mayor of Kingstown. She shared the set with Jeremy Renner in a big-budget production. Her role as a defense attorney required a technical precision in legal dialogue that few actors master without hesitation. Memorizing legal jargon became her daily routine during the months of filming.
This is how she got to 2023 with her role in The Big Door Prize. In this Apple TV+ series, she plays a mother dealing with the expectations of a small town under a light sci-fi premise. The show was filmed mainly on location in Georgia, USA. Shooting her scenes in 2024 for a streaming platform was completed in just twelve workdays.
