Laurie Davidson graduated from the London drama school and landed an audition that changed his career path. He had no major professional experience at the time. But in 2017, the TNT network decided he would be the face of a young William Shakespeare in the series Will.
It was a risky bet.
The production spent millions recreating a London with a music-video aesthetic and a rock rhythm. Davidson had to learn to recite verse while moving with frenetic energy. The series was not renewed for a second season. But the actor's name was already noted in the planners of the most influential casting directors in the UK.
Before moving into television, Davidson studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he learned that physical control is just as important as the voice. His classical training allowed him to take on complex roles without losing his natural ease in front of the camera.
In 2019, the film adaptation of the musical Cats, directed by Tom Hooper, arrived. Davidson played Mr. Mistoffelees. It was a grueling shoot in which the actors wore motion-capture suits and facial markers for later digital processing.
The audience didn't respond the same way.
Critics were harsh about the film's visual results. But Davidson's performance drew praise for his ability to convey emotion through layers of digital effects. That same year, he appeared in The Good Liar alongside Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren. The project grossed 33 million dollars at the worldwide box office.
His career didn't stop at major studios. In 2021, he played Mark in the miniseries The Serpent. Here he set aside the artifice to focus on a gritty, tense realism based on the real crimes committed by Charles Sobhraj in the 1970s.
In 2022, he joined the cast of The Sandman to play Mark Brewer. The adaptation of Neil Gaiman's work required a very specific tone, which the actor handled with restraint. As a result, his presence in high-budget productions for streaming platforms became routine.
And it worked.
In 2023, he played Ingilmundr in the film The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die. Filming in Hungary was physically demanding because of the weather conditions and the battle choreography. Davidson performed his own action scenes to lend more authenticity to the character in the hand-to-hand combat sequences.
In 2024, he joined the series Mary & George, playing Robert Carr. In this period drama, he shared the screen with Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine. The production design used real English locations, such as Knole House in Kent, to recreate the court of King James I.
