Lee Jun-hyuk added nearly twenty kilograms of muscle to film The Roundup: No Way Out in 2023. It wasn't a change driven by vanity. He wanted his body to project a real threat opposite a giant like Ma Dong-seok.
And the gamble paid off.
His career didn't start in the spotlight or on red carpets. In 2006, he first appeared in a music video for the band Typhoon. But it was his role in the drama First Wives' Club in 2007 that gave him a real foothold on Korean television.
For years, he worked on projects where his classic leading-man looks seemed to typecast him. He appeared in City Hunter in 2011, playing a rigid, obsessive prosecutor. Before filming that series, he studied law on his own to understand the technical language.
But audiences began to notice that Lee Jun-hyuk preferred characters with gray edges. He had no interest in being the perfect hero who saves the girl. He went for the grime under his characters' fingernails.
In 2017, he landed the role that changed how the industry saw him. He played Seo Dong-jae, a corrupt, sleazy prosecutor, in the series Stranger. He was a contemptible man, but his charisma kept you from fully hating him.
Many actors would have softened the character to make him likable. He chose to make him more pathetic and ambitious. This creative decision allowed him to reprise the role in the second season of the series in 2020.
Because Lee Jun-hyuk understands that audiences connect with human weakness.
In 2020, he starred in 365: Repeat the Year. It was a time-travel thriller with a tense premise. The series didn't draw massive audiences, but it earned cult status among crime genre fans for its relentless pace.
Off set, he keeps a low profile that borders on anonymity. He doesn't go to parties or seek constant exposure on social media. In 2022, he released an illustrated book titled Adiós, Popcorn, inspired by his late dog.
He also designed a simple mobile game with the same theme. He is a man who processes grief through visual creation. Before acting, he wanted to be a director or a comic book artist.
In 2023, he joined the cast of Vigilante for Disney+. He played a corporate heir obsessed with vigilantes. His performance was restrained and controlled.
But what really stood out was his ability to shoot action scenes without stunt doubles for much of the footage. He trained in boxing and martial arts for three months before production began.
In 2024, production company Studio Dragon released Dongjae, the Good or the Bastard. It's a spin-off focused entirely on his character Stranger. Filming took six months, and the final budget topped 12 billion won.
