Libuše Švormová was born in Prague in 1935 and never needed grand gestures to fill the screen. She enrolled at the DAMU theater school almost by inertia, but became one of the most recognizable faces in Czechoslovak cinema. Her voice shaped how audiences perceived her long before her face became popular.
And she did it without anyone ever seeing her.
For decades, she was the voice behind Angélique's Czech dubbing in the famous French film saga. That work brought her a strange kind of fame, since people recognized her on the street as soon as she opened her mouth to ask for bread. But Švormová did not want to be just a voice in the darkness of a recording booth.
In 1961, she joined the Prague Municipal Theatres. She spent nearly thirty years there, performing everything from Russian classics to contemporary dramas. Film sought her out for roles as intellectual women with an unmistakable depth.
In the film Aféry mé ženy from 1972, she played a photographer dealing with her husband's jealousy. That role brought in strong box office numbers at local theaters of the time. It was a moment when Czech cinema was trying to break free from political rigidity with tangled comedies.
The industry sometimes typecast her as a sophisticated and somewhat cold woman. But on stage, she broke that image with far more visceral and broken characters.
The stage was her true laboratory.
She appeared in Léto s kovbojem in 1976 and handled rural humor with the same precision she brought to urban drama. Directors knew Švormová never faltered in long takes, so they handed her complex dialogue other actors preferred to avoid.
Her capacity for work kept her active even when the production system changed after the fall of the Soviet bloc. She did not stop when mass television series arrived. In 2022, she starred in the film Stáří není pro sraby, directed by Tomáš Magnusek.
She plays a woman living in a residence who keeps a sharp clarity in the face of physical decline. It is a dry role with no sentimental concessions. The film exceeded distribution expectations on independent circuits across Europe.
Technique has always been her absolute priority.
In 2024, she worked on the Czech version of the series Call My Agent, titled Vytoč mého agenta. The production was filmed mainly in central Prague locations and had a budget of several million Czech crowns for its release on the Voyo platform. The filming contract stipulated ten-hour days of outdoor shooting.
