Luis Roberto Guzmán arrived in Mexico City in 1999 with one suitcase and an acceptance to Patricia Reyes Spíndola's acting school. He came from Puerto Rico after studying at the university on his home island. But his plan was not to be just another face in the hallways of the big television networks.
In 2000 he landed his first role in the telenovela Siempre te amaré. It was a modest start that taught him how the Mexican industry worked from the inside. At the time, contracts were signed for very long periods, and creative freedom was a luxury for very few.
For a long time, Guzmán avoided **an exclusive contract that would limit his movements** outside traditional sets.
In 2007 he put on the leather jacket to star in El Pantera. The series ran for three seasons and required constant martial arts training that caused him real injuries during filming.
It was his first big show of authority.
That Televisa production tried to imitate the language of comic books and American action movies. But the actor decided he did not want to be typecast in action roles and looked for projects in musical theater. By 2004 he had already impressed critics with his role in the stage production of Cabaret.
Traditional television was losing ground, and he moved to digital platforms quickly. In 2021 he played Lorenzo in the series ¿Quién mató a Sara?. The production reached the number one spot on the most-watched lists in the United States and Europe for several consecutive weeks.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024 he joined the cast of the sixth season of Cobra Kai. He shot his scenes in Atlanta surrounded by a crew that barely spoke Spanish, so he had to rely on his fluent English to bring to life a character tied to the mythology of The Karate Kid.
**More than 190 countries saw his face** in one of the most profitable franchises of the last decade.
In 2023 he also took part in the melodrama Tierra de esperanza, playing Marco Rivas. Filming took place mainly on location in the state of Veracruz under extreme heat.
Luis Roberto Guzmán turned 51 years old in 2024.
