Maite Perroni Beorlegui had no intention of auditioning for that 2004 casting call. She was in her third year at Televisa's Center for Artistic Education and planned to finish her training before looking for professional work. But a friend talked her into getting in line, and she ended up landing the role of Lupita Fernández in Rebelde.
What began as a supporting role in a teen telenovela ended up consuming five years of her life. The phenomenon of the band RBD led her to perform more than 400 concerts in stadiums around the world. That brutal exposure could have burned out her career before she turned thirty.
And the gamble paid off.
When the group disbanded in 2009, many expected her to fade from the scene like so many other lab-made products. Perroni chose to stay on familiar ground and went on to land several lead roles in the classic format of Mexican television. During that period she starred in Cuidado con el ángel and La gata, productions that were exported to more than one hundred countries.
But the market was changing, and she knew it.
In 2019, she decided to step away from exclusive contracts in search of stories with a different tone. She wanted to leave behind her image as the long-suffering heroine of afternoon soap operas. She signed with Netflix to lead Oscuro deseo in 2020, and the change was complete. The series explored erotic suspense and definitively moved her away from the young audience that had grown up watching her.
The risk was real.
The production became an immediate global success. In its first 28 days, it drew 35 million unique viewers on the platform. That figure allowed her to negotiate not only as an actress but as a key part of the creative decisions for her next projects.
Before filming Triada in 2023, she spent months training to play three characters who were physically identical but had opposite personalities. It was an exhausting shoot of nearly one hundred days, where the technical setup for the shared scenes demanded millimeter precision. The series was based on a real case of three siblings separated at birth.
Perroni founded her own company to manage her interests and take part in financing content. In 2021, she took part in the production of Sin ti no puedo, a feature film shot in Spain alongside Mauricio Ochmann and Alfonso Bassave. It was her way of entering the European market with a co-production aiming for a more restrained psychological thriller tone.
She didn't just want to act; she wanted to decide which stories deserved a budget.
Her return to the stage in 2023 with RBD's reunion tour was not a step back in her career. She saw it as a logistical and emotional closing chapter after fifteen years of musical silence. She juggled rehearsals with her recent motherhood and the management of a business structure that moved hundreds of workers across the Americas.
The Soy Rebelde Tour wrapped up in December 2023 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City after grossing more than $130 million at the box office.
