Landing on a set in San José in the late 1980s with no connections and a plane ticket won in a contest teaches you more about television than four semesters of theory at university. Mariló Montero began building her craft in front of the cameras of Canal 2 Univisión in Costa Rica, where she edited and hosted the music show TNT while working toward her teaching degree. She did it all in front of the lens and behind the spotlights.
It wasn't advertising glamour; it was pure trench work.
Jesús Hermida saw potential in that young woman from Estella, Navarre, while he was preparing the morning revamp of Spanish public television. In 1990 he added her to the lineup of A mi manera on TVE to get her seasoned in a demanding ensemble live broadcast. One timing slip on that set could leave you off camera for weeks.
And she learned the code one millimeter at a time.
Soon offers came in from the private broadcasters launching their channels in Madrid. Between 1991 and 1993, Luis Mariñas had her cross-checking wire feeds and writing breaking news for the late-night newscast Entre hoy y mañana on Telecinco. It was a tough stint focused on news discipline.
But the pace of the capital came to a halt when she decided to settle in Seville in the mid-1990s. In June 1995 she joined Canal Sur to take on duties that went far beyond reading a teleprompter on screen.
There, she coordinated entire newsrooms, built formats from scratch, and took on demanding shows such as Andalucía Directo and Buenos días, Andalucía. The Andalusian regional broadcaster served for more than a decade as her daily training ground, accumulating more than two thousand hours of live airtime before she considered any return to the national circuit.
Because regional television demanded solving surprises with two cameras and a loose cable.
In 2009 TVE tapped her experience to make her deputy director and host of La mañana de La 1, a time slot dominated by fierce competition among private networks. Montero took on the assignment without filters or a safety net.
For seven seasons she turned every broadcast into a public square where political current affairs and off-script moments that set social media on fire coexisted. Several sectors questioned her unscripted interventions, but audience response kept the format alive with a 12% average share in its most competitive slots. So she took the wear and tear with the composure of someone who knows the inner workings of the business.
In 2016 she decided to abruptly stop and end her contract with the public broadcaster. She needed physical distance from the daily studio grind and spent a long stretch in New York studying production dynamics far removed from the earpiece routine.
Her return to the front lines didn't seek out comfort zones. In 2022 she agreed to co-host Todo es mentira on Cuatro, standing in for Marta Flich during her maternity leave, sharing the desk with Risto Mejide in a sharp-tongued back-and-forth with no safety net.
The theme song worked well with the ratings. Mediaset entrusted them with broadcasting the New Year's Eve chimes of 2022 from Torrejón de Ardoz, where they covered the countdown for 792,000 viewers in simultaneous broadcast.
Then came the offers from closed-format entertainment shows. In 2023 she hung from a harness during the physical trials of The Edge on Antena 3 and tried out baroque verse on the show A este paso (no) estrenamos on La 2.
In 2025 she finalized her entry into the tenth edition of MasterChef Celebrity on La 1, submitting to the discipline of professional kitchens during prime time.
The work schedule left no room for breaks. Recording days required daily call times at seven in the morning in the warehouses of Fuente el Saz de Jarama, with twelve hours of continuous shooting under cold lights.
