In 1999, Marjorie de Sousa walked the stage at the Miss Venezuela pageant representing the Federal Dependencies but did not win the crown. It didn't matter. That early defeat ended any temptation to make a living from advertising modeling and sped up her move onto the sets in Caracas.

Nobody handed her screen time.

She debuted in 2000 in the cast of Full Moon Lovers on Venevisión. That first shoot taught her the daily grind of Latin American melodrama, where an actor films twelve hours a day and memorizes entire pages with no room for error. The following year, she added credits to War of the Women, and critics found that her presence worked better gritting her teeth than sobbing inconsolably.

The Business of Making Viewers Suffer

Miami opened the doors to international distribution in 2002 thanks to Wild Cat. Her role as Camelia Valente put her on television across Latin America, thanks to a measured coolness and an impeccable command of dramatic excess. Commercial networks soon came calling with offers of the same kind.

But the industry tends to typecast anyone who works as an antagonist. Marjorie took on projects in Mexico and the United States, including Mariana of the Night in 2003 and Bought Love in 2008, always carrying the label of a textbook villain.

And audiences wanted more villainy.

In 2012, Televisa gave her the script by Kendra Ferreti for the telenovela Amores verdaderos. That role became the most profitable character of her career, reaching audience peaks of 30% on Mexican television and earning her the award for Best Villain at the TVyNovelas Awards in 2014.

Soap operas, sitcoms and cross-network contracts

In 2014, she took the lead role in The Dead Don't Hurt opposite Pedro Fernández. The production ran into serious trouble from the start when the lead actor abruptly left, forcing the team to re-shoot scenes against the clock to keep episodes on air. Marjorie carried the weight of the double shoots without delaying the delivery schedules set by the network.

Because on television, the pace never forgives.

Looking to try other formats, she hit movie theaters in 2018 with the comedy The Simplest Thing Is Making It All Complicated, shot between Mexico and Spain under director Eduardo Martínez Peña. That same year, she signed with Telemundo to lead On the Other Side of the Wall, a sixty-episode project centered on the border tensions between Mexico and the United States.

The Coldness of the Script in the Streaming Era

In 2021, she returned to the San Ángel studios to shoot The Heartless Woman, playing Julia Torreblanca. The show drew more than four million viewers per episode in the U.S. Hispanic market, outperforming major English-language networks in the same time slot.

In 2023, she took on two different projects: the romantic comedy Christmas Lovers and the melodrama Coup de chance. In 2024, she premiered the film My Perfect Ex and wrapped filming on The Count: Love and Honor, a period production of ninety episodes shot entirely on sets in Miami.

For the crime series Wolf, Kill to Survive, scheduled for 2026, the production company set a fourteen-week shooting schedule split between Mexico City and desert locations in the state of Sonora.
