Matthew Daddario didn't grow up surrounded by scripts or spotlights. At home in New York, the air was full of politics and criminal law. His father, Richard, was a prosecutor and head of the New York Police Department's counterterrorism unit. His grandfather, Emilio Daddario, served in the U.S. Congress for years. Law was the family language, and Matthew seemed destined to follow that gray path of law offices.
He studied business administration at Indiana University. He didn't attend prestigious drama schools or seek applause in school plays. But his interest in acting came late, perhaps through the influence of his older sister Alexandra, or perhaps out of simple curiosity. He started going to auditions after he already had his university degree in hand.
No one expected a business administration graduate to end up in front of a green screen.
His first break came in 2012 with the film The Debut. It was a small role that barely caught critics' attention. A year later, he appeared in Delivery Man alongside Vince Vaughn. On that shoot, he realized his looks wouldn't be the only thing that mattered. Film demands patience, and he had plenty. In 2014, he shot When the Game Stands Tall, and his name began to circulate in casting offices in Los Angeles.
In 2016, his life changed dramatically. He landed the role of Alec Lightwood in the series Shadowhunters. The show adapted Cassandra Clare's young adult novels and had a very vocal fan base on social media. He played a disciplined archer who struggled with his sexuality in an urban fantasy world. The success was immediate and massive.
And the gamble paid off.
For three seasons, Matthew Daddario carried the emotional weight of the show's most beloved subplot. His chemistry with Harry Shum Jr. generated thousands of articles and online debates. But he always kept his feet on the ground and never let the noise of fan conventions go to his head. In 2016, he also starred in the remake of Cabin Fever produced by Eli Roth. It was a bloody experience that flopped at the box office and was mercilessly savaged by critics.
But the actor didn't let a bad comment stop him. He kept working on the series until its cancellation in 2019. That ending left thousands of teenagers heartbroken over the loss of their favorite character. Daddario closed that chapter with a smile and returned to New York in search of projects far from special effects and battle makeup.
In 2021, he joined the cast of the second season of Why Women Kill. He played Scooter, a charming and somewhat clumsy actor trying to get ahead in 1940s Hollywood. It was a necessary change of pace. He moved away from Alec Lightwood's seriousness to explore physical comedy and slapstick. Audiences appreciated seeing a new face after years of bows and arrows.
Television made him famous, but film demands something else.
That same year, he appeared in the thriller Wild Game. It was a low-budget project shot in rural locations across the United States. In 2022, he shot Into the Deep, a suspense film set on a yacht where isolation played a key role. Matthew Daddario now prefers short shoots and roles that don't force him to sign five-year contracts.
In 2024, he traveled to Belgium to shoot the historical drama The Last Front. The story is set during World War I, and Matthew shares the screen with Iain Glen. It is a European production with a more mature and restrained tone. In 2025, he joined the cast of the comedy The Party’s Over. The latter film had a budget of twelve million dollars and was shot entirely on location in Atlanta.
