Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Jovon Ruth Pete was born in Houston in 1995 and learned to rhyme by watching her mother lock herself into home recording booths. She was eighteen when she chose her stage name, because in Texas people call any woman over six feet tall a stud. She wasn't looking for gentle metaphors or public apologies.

For four seasons she juggled healthcare administration classes at Texas Southern University with improv battles in South Park parking lots. She posted videos to social media while passing public health exams. In 2018 she signed with the local label 1501 Certified Entertainment and recorded the EP Tina Snow.

No one saw it coming.

She soon discovered the fine print in that first contract, which handed over 60% of her publishing rights to a company without sufficient legal structure. In 2020 she sued the managers in Harris County courts so she could edit new tracks without paying crushing fees. She won the injunction and released the album Good News that same fall.

The Assault on the Burbank Sets

Los Angeles studios were quick to demand her physical presence in front of the cameras. In 2022 she took a brief role in the Marvel series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, dancing in front of Tatiana Maslany after the credits of the third episode. It looked like a simple publicity stunt designed to generate viral clips.

But that four-hour shoot at the Atlanta studios opened the doors of independent film casting offices to her. Director Larry Charles cast her in Dicks: The Musical, a wild farce produced by A24 in 2023, where she played Gloria, the CEO of a delusional corporation. She sang, spat insults at the camera and shared the screen with Nathan Lane without turning down the volume on her character.

On cable television, she also found another opening, voicing a hormonal monster in the seventh season of the animated comedy Big Mouth.

Megan always cited Queen Latifah as the professional model to follow, admiring her ability to go from street rap to the multimillion-dollar deals of major studios. That's why in 2021 she signed a first-look deal with Netflix to develop and produce scripted series under her own label.

Controlling the footage is key.

Media Trials and Trench-Coat Cameras

The shooting she suffered in her feet in July 2020, outside a party in Hollywood, ended with rapper Tory Lanez sentenced to ten years in prison in 2023. Over the three years of the criminal case, she endured digital smear campaigns on forums and syndicated radio shows. So she turned all that media shrapnel into the darkest tracks on her album Traumazine in 2022.

Documentarian Nneka Onuorah captured that emotional breakdown in the feature film Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words, released in 2024 on Amazon. The film skipped the usual promotional postcards and instead filmed anxiety attacks in tour vans and late-night phone calls with ballistics experts.

In 2024 she founded the production company Hot Girl Productions to self-release her album Megan with independent international distribution. The first music video from that campaign cost four hundred thousand dollars to shoot in a Burbank hangar and recouped its budget in four days through direct digital sales.
