Three months are enough to shape three decades. Sarah Joe Chamoun arrived in Miami with a history degree from the University of Texas and a precarious job at a hamburger joint. In October 2014, she stepped onto an adult film set for the first time under the stage name Mia Khalifa.
The shoot lasted just ninety days.
In December 2014, the production company Bang Bros posted the hijab scene online. That half-hour clip sparked a wave of international harassment and direct threats from ISIS against a 21-year-old woman. As the servers crashed under the massive traffic from around the world, she received a total payment of about 12,000 dollars for her entire catalog.
In February 2015, Sarah Joe Chamoun packed up and cut ties with the industry. But leaving a Florida studio behind was not enough to regain control of her own identity. Her assignment contracts were one-sided, and the distribution of her videos never stopped.
For five years, she tried to work as a receptionist and bookkeeper in offices in Texas. Her digital footprint weighed too heavily, and HR screening filters blocked her from being hired by any ordinary company. So she decided to use that same media spotlight to earn money on her own terms.
In 2017, she made the jump to online television as a sports commentator on the show Out of Bounds alongside former NBA player Gilbert Arenas. On the mic, she showed a technical command of ice hockey and American football that caught more than one veteran analyst off guard.
Corporate television didn't last long.
The shift in public perception came in 2020 when creator Ramy Youssef cast her in the second season of the dramedy Ramy on Hulu. In the episode titled Miakhalifa.mov, she played a satirical version of herself to question American society's sexual obsessions with the Middle East. That fifteen-minute appearance won critics' applause for its sharpness.
In August 2020, she auctioned off the glasses she wore in her most-viewed videos and raised more than 104,000 dollars for the Red Cross after the explosion at the Beirut port. It was her way of turning other people's curiosity into a direct benefit for her home country.
That same year, she opened an OnlyFans profile with a strict rule: no explicit content. The decision angered longtime porn fans but earned her a millions-strong income by setting her own boundaries.
And her commercial machine expanded into other industries. In 2022, she starred in the music video for the song Mamiii by Becky G and Karol G. In 2023, she designed her own jewelry line called Sheytan and took part in fashion campaigns for clothing brands such as Heaven by Marc Jacobs.
The past never fully goes away.
Community petitions with more than two million signatures to take her scenes off the internet had no legal traction in the United States. The production company still holds the rights to the material recorded in 2014 and keeps the website bearing her name running. Every click on those twelve videos keeps generating profits on a balance sheet that doesn't belong to her.
