Michelle Keegan divided her time between a department store makeup counter and the check-in desk at Manchester airport. In 2007, she decided to audition for a legendary series without ever having attended drama school. It was her second professional audition, and she expected nothing from the process.
Then luck came her way.
The producers of Coronation Street were looking for a very specific street-smart energy for the character Tina McIntyre. Keegan landed the role and stayed on the show for six years in a row. She won the British Soap Award for Best Newcomer in 2008, but in 2014 she decided her character had to die. It was a risky decision, because the stability of a steady paycheck in British television is a comfortable haven that few want to leave.
But she wanted to shoot outside the Manchester studios.
In 2016, she took on the role of Georgie Lane in the war drama Our Girl. She had to travel to South Africa and Malaysia to shoot combat scenes while carrying gear that weighed nearly twenty kilos. That BBC production helped move her away from the girl-next-door image the tabloid press had pinned on her during her years on the soap opera.
She filmed four seasons of the military series until 2020.
During that period she juggled the uniform with other period projects, with mixed results. In 2017 she took part in the miniseries Tina and Bobby, where she played the wife of the English national football team captain. Critics began to appreciate her ability to carry close-ups without artifice (something many daytime television actors never manage to polish).
The dark comedy Brassic appeared in her career in 2019. Her role as Erin Croft allowed her to explore a sharp, dry humor deeply rooted in her northern English roots. The series was renewed for several consecutive seasons thanks to a loyal audience on Sky. But the real massive breakthrough came through global streaming and literary adaptations.
In 2024, she starred in Fool Me Once (Fool Me Once), the adaptation of Harlan Coben's novel for Netflix. She played Maya Stern, a former soldier caught in a family conspiracy after her husband's murder. The series racked up more than 60 million views in its first two weeks on air. That figure put her on the radar of major American studios almost automatically.
Before this ratings hit, she traveled to Australia in 2023 to film Ten Pound Poms. It is a drama about British migrants who emigrated to the antipodes in the 1950s. In this production, she played a nurse searching for her son in a hostile, dusty environment.
The shoot in Sydney lasted four intense months.
Keegan has turned down offers to appear in big-budget reality TV shows in order to focus on her scripted projects. In 2025, the second season of Ten Pound Poms was confirmed for production after the format's strong export figures. Her Netflix deal to lead new suspense projects was signed with a temporary exclusivity clause for the European market.
