The Broken Racket and a Stroke of Luck

Miguel Ángel Silvestre wanted to be a professional tennis player, but a shoulder injury at a tournament in Hungary derailed his plans. He was thirteen, and the dream of the racket faded amid rehabilitation sessions and plenty of uncertainty. He studied to become a physical therapist out of sheer family habit. But his aunt introduced him to the world of theater, and that young man from Castellón traded clay courts for the boards of a stage.

His early work was modest. In 2005, he appeared in the film La distancia, playing a troubled boxer. That role forced him to work on his physique obsessively. The sporting discipline of his teenage years carried over directly into his acting method, and that's how he began to forge a very specific profile in the Spanish industry.

Success did not come gradually.

In 2008, the premiere of the series Sin tetas no hay paraíso sparked a surge of popularity that was hard to manage. His portrayal of El Duque brought an suffocating fame that threatened to overshadow every other acting range he had. Audiences didn't see the actor, only the erotic myth with the gravelly voice. That's why he decided to step away from the national spotlight and seek projects that would break away from that tough-guy image.

El Duque Against the Leading Man Label

After turning down several lucrative television offers, he sought refuge in auteur cinema. In 2012, he worked under Pedro Almodóvar in Los amantes pasajeros, in a supporting but strategic role. He wanted to learn from the best and understand how the machinery of major international productions worked. Silvestre has always kept his eyes set beyond Spain's borders.

And the gamble paid off.

The series Velvet in 2013 won him the affection of a mass audience again, but with a different nuance. He was no longer the dangerous criminal but the heir to a fashion gallery empire on Madrid's Gran Vía. However, the real turning point came in 2015, when the Wachowski sisters cast him in Sense8. Playing Lito Rodríguez was a major challenge because he had to embody a Mexican actor who hid his homosexuality.

On that international shoot, he learned that vulnerability was his best tool. He shot scenes in cities such as Seoul, Mexico City and Reykjavik while juggling complex scripts and a frenetic production pace. That experience allowed him to break into the American market without having to go through the usual Los Angeles casting calls.

The leap to the global market

In 2017, he joined the cast of Narcos to play Franklin Jurado. It was a smart move to keep his presence on streaming platforms before they came to dominate audiovisual consumption. But he never left the Spanish market. In 2021, he premiered Sky Rojo and worked with Álex de la Iglesia on the horror series 30 Coins, where he showed a much more physical and visceral side.

The phone never stopped ringing.

During 2023 and 2024, he focused his efforts on the series Los Enviados, filmed on location in Mexico and Colombia. This Paramount+ production allowed him to work alongside Juan José Campanella and explore a genre that blends thriller with the supernatural. Critics noted that his screen presence no longer depended solely on his looks but on a gestural maturity built over years of international shoots.

In 2025, development began on new fiction projects for the Latin American market under partial exclusivity contracts. The budget for his latest TV productions exceeds four million euros per block of episodes. The production company set the shooting schedule for his next film on location in Valencia for the last quarter of that same year.
