The supporting actor who survived the dinosaurs

Miguel Sandoval didn't chase movie-poster fame early on. In 1975, he began studying mime at a school in Albuquerque, and that physical control gave him a competitive edge in Los Angeles casting calls. But film didn't come knocking right away, because he preferred to hone his craft in experimental theater for nearly a decade.

Spike Lee discovered him in the late eighties. The director was looking for faces with a dry intensity, and Sandoval fit that profile of a serious man who seems to know more than he says. In 1989, he filmed Do the Right Thing, and in 1991 he worked again under Lee's direction in Jungle Fever.

And the gamble paid off.

In 1993, Steven Spielberg gave him a brief but pivotal role for the story of its time. He played Juanito Rostagno in Jurassic Park, and his image of holding a block of amber with a mosquito inside became etched in the minds of millions of viewers. He cashed a big paycheck for just a couple of days' work on a set that simulated a Dominican mine.

His presence became a constant in the action thrillers of the nineties. In 1994 he appeared in Clear and Present Danger alongside Harrison Ford, and a year later he joined the cast of Get Shorty. The industry often typecast him in authority roles or as characters tied to drug trafficking because of his Hispanic roots, but he always tried to give them a humanity that wasn't in the original script.

A haven in television and a steady paycheck

Real financial stability arrived with the turn of the century and the rise of long-running series. In 2005 he accepted the role of District Attorney Manuel Devalos on Medium and stayed with the project for seven consecutive seasons. This contract allowed him to move away from the precariousness of the supporting actor who lives waiting for his agent's next call.

And the pace didn't let up.

In 2011 he wrapped up his run on Patricia Arquette and returned to film with character roles. In 2013 he worked on Oculus, and in 2016 he joined Blood Father to share scenes with Mel Gibson. Before accepting a job, he usually reads the full script to check whether his character has a worthy ending or is just a narrative formality.

In 2018 he joined Shonda Rhimes' universe with the series Station 19. He played Captain Pruitt Herrera for three years, and his exit from the show in 2020 was one of the most talked-about moments among ABC viewers. He accepted his character's death because he preferred to explore new formats on the streaming platforms that were beginning to dominate the market.

Television gave him early retirement.

In 2023, he played Miguel Ganon in the political thriller The Diplomat. His character reflected the maturity of an actor who no longer needs to shout to command the screen. In 2024, he joined the cast of the Apple TV+ series Sugar, playing Bernie Siegel under the direction of Fernando Meirelles.

He lives in Los Angeles and has more than 150 credits on his IMDb profile. He still earns image rights from reruns of his nineties work on cable channels around the world. In 2024, his estimated net worth exceeded two million dollars, thanks to his real estate investments in New Mexico.
