The architect who preferred the joke

Mike Krüger never needed a complicated script to fill cinemas across West Germany.

In the early 1970s he was just an architecture student in Hamburg who killed time playing guitar in nightclubs. But his ability to turn everyday life into something ridiculous pulled him out of the classroom before he finished his degree.

In 1975 he released the song Mein Gott, Walther, and the entire country began obsessively repeating its chorus. It was a massive hit that sold more than 600,000 copies in just a few weeks and opened the doors to an industry looking for fresh faces.

And the gamble paid off.

His looks were his best marketing tool. Krüger had a prominent nose that, far from being a complex, became his trademark and the engine behind a series of films that dominated European box office for a decade.

In 1982 he starred in Piratensender Powerplay alongside Thomas Gottschalk. That low-budget film about a pirate radio station captured the rebellious and somewhat naive spirit of German youth at the time.

The Era of the Supernoses

The chemistry between Krüger and Gottschalk was so profitable that producers decided to milk the concept until it was exhausted. That's how the Die Supernasen franchise was born.

Critics hated him.

While academics called for a deep, reflective German cinema, Krüger filled theaters with Zwei Nasen tanken Super in 1984. These productions were designed for quick consumption, packed with visual gags and absurd situations that required no cultural translation.

But his success in film didn't pull him away from music. In 1980 he released Der Nippel, a song that hit number one in Germany and Austria. It topped the sales charts for weeks, proving that his connection with the public went far beyond the big screen.

In the mid-1980s he shot Die Einsteiger, a film that parodied movie genres through a machine that let people step inside the movies. It was an ambitious project by the standards of German comedy in 1985, yet it kept that clean, family-friendly brand of humor.

A Refuge on the Small Screen

When the 1980s film comedy model began to show signs of fatigue, Krüger didn't sit around waiting for a phone call. He jumped to television with an agility few of his generation managed.

From 1996 on, he was a regular cast member of 7 Tage, 7 Köpfe. This weekly comedy show stayed on the air until 2005 and allowed him to reinvent himself as a sharp yet accessible current-affairs commentator for all ages.

Because Krüger always understood that entertainment is a local business.

He never tried to make the jump to Hollywood or went after dramatic roles to win over the experts. He stayed true to a style of comedy that, though it may seem stuck in another era, allowed him to maintain enviable financial stability for five decades.

In 2015 he published his autobiography, titled Mein Gott, Walther – Das Leben ist kein Ponyhof. In its pages he detailed how he handled fame without falling into the excesses typical of the industry, and how his wife Birgit took charge of the finances from day one.

He announced his definitive retirement from the stage in 2021, saying he had already told all the jokes he had planned. His last major media appearance came in 2023 with the launch of the podcast Die Supernasen, where he chats weekly with his old partner Gottschalk about the entertainment industry.

He lives permanently in Hamburg and has no intention of stepping in front of a movie camera again.
