Milana Vayntrub arrived in West Hollywood at just two years old. Her family was fleeing antisemitism in the Soviet Union and sought a new life in the United States of 1989. Those early years were pure survival in an environment that felt foreign and hostile due to the language barrier.
She began working in Barbie commercials to help with the family bills, since money was tight at home. She had no deep artistic vocation at that point, but there was an urgent financial need that pushed her into recording studios.
In 1995, she landed a small role on the series ER. It didn't make her famous, but it taught her how a professional film set worked before she turned ten. She worked alongside George Clooney at a time when television was still recorded on heavy analog formats.
The industry is a strange place for a refugee girl.
She stepped away from acting for a while to study at the University of California, San Diego, where she graduated with a degree in Communications. Her real training, however, happened on the stages of the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles. In that improv space, she honed a dry comedic rhythm that would become her biggest professional asset.
In 2013, she signed a contract with telecom company AT&T to play Lily Adams. What seemed like a paycheck gig for commercials became a constant presence in American homes for three years in a row. Audiences connected with her naturalness and her ability to deliver sarcastic lines without losing her commercial smile.
The character worked so well that the brand brought her back in 2020 for new national campaigns. But the success brought massive online harassment, which led her to insist that her shots in the ads be head-on or behind a counter to protect her physical privacy. It was a firm decision that put her mental health first over the aesthetic demands of the advertising agency.
And the gamble paid off.
She herself began directing many of those commercials after proving she knew the character better than any creative in New York. She found that controlling the camera gave her a confidence that pure acting denied her in moments of greatest public exposure.
Together with Stevie Nelson, she created the YouTube channel LivePrudeGirls. In that digital space, she explored a much edgier, less polite humor than her corporate contracts allowed. Those short clips helped her catch the attention of directors looking for fresh faces for a new TV comedy.
She landed the role of Sloane in the series This Is Us during 2016. It was an opportunity to show that her range could move beyond laugh-track comedy without losing the freshness that defined her. But television is a volatile business, and many of her most ambitious projects fell by the wayside.
She never stopped looking for small projects.
In 2018, she voiced Squirrel Girl in the Marvel Rising franchise. Although the live-action New Warriors series never aired due to distribution problems, she kept her connection to the character across several animated formats. Since then, she has been one of the most recognizable voices in the Marvel animated universe.
She starred in Werewolves Within in 2021. Critics praised her ability to carry a horror-comedy plot based on a virtual reality video game. The shoot took place in extreme cold in New York State on a tight independent production budget.
In 2024, she starred in the dark comedy The Prank, playing a physics teacher at a high school. The release was planned for independent cinemas after a run at several genre festivals across the United States.
