In the early hours of April 8, 2024, a wooden chair fell from the sixth floor of Eric Church's bar in Nashville. It landed less than a meter from two local police officers. Morgan Wallen smiled as he was handcuffed minutes later while officers collected the pieces of furniture.

That scene sums up the celebrity better than any ad campaign on Music Row. The Tennessee singer has spent a decade operating in a no man's land between public self-destruction and a commercial punch unprecedented in the Anglo-American record market.

No other musician of his generation has racked up as many arrests while breaking commercial records once held by The Beatles or Garth Brooks.

Nobody in Nashville saw the storm coming.

The Pitcher Who Lost His Arm

Before stepping into a recording studio, he wanted to throw fastballs in the Major Leagues. At Gibbs High School in Corryton, he stood out as a star pitcher and dreamed of a college baseball scholarship.

His elbow gave out before he ever reached college.

A torn elbow ligament ended his sports dreams in seconds. So Wallen picked up an acoustic guitar his mother had given him years earlier and started writing rough verses about pickup trucks, small-town heartbreak and cheap beer. In 2014, his mother signed him up for auditions on the TV show The Voice.

Adam Levine took him onto his team before Usher rescued him in the middle rounds. But the show eliminated him in the playoffs without mercy. That early exit spared him from signing the exploitative contracts of mainstream television and opened the door to small independent offices in Tennessee.

The cancellation that multiplied sales

In 2018, his debut studio album, If I Know Me, put several singles on rural radio stations thanks to Canadian producer Joey Moi, a former architect of Nickelback's sound. Moi blended clean banjos with programmed hip-hop drums and snares with heavy bass.

In February 2021, a neighbor recorded Wallen shouting racist slurs in the middle of the street after a night of out-of-control partying. The scandal erupted immediately. Major radio networks pulled his music within hours, streaming platforms removed his face from their editorial playlists, and his record label suspended his contract.

Any corporate playbook predicted the end of his career. Sales of his catalog grew 300 percent that same week. His fans bought physical copies and played his songs on repeat as an act of defiance against the major entertainment corporations.

His album Dangerous: The Double Album held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for ten straight weeks. Wallen checked into a rehab center, donated half a million dollars to charities serving the Black community, and sold out stadiums in minutes.

Seventy-Three Songs on Two Albums

And the algorithm machine did the rest.

In March 2023, the singer released One Thing at a Time with an massive lineup of 36 tracks. Music critics questioned the album's monumental length, but listeners devoured every minute. The song Last Night spent sixteen weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

In May 2024, he recorded I Had Some Help with Post Malone. The track debuted straight at number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Country Airplay charts in the United States. Wallen no longer needed the approval of the traditional industry, since he had millions of direct streams on phones across half the country.

In May 2025, he repeated the formula with I’m the Problem, another double album with 37 tracks and 117 minutes of music written on his private farm outside Nashville. The album placed nine songs simultaneously in the U.S. top ten during its first seven days on the market.

For the album's final mix, Joey Moi applied multiband compression to Wallen's dry vocals and saturated the bass at 45 Hz with 1073 Neve tube preamps.

Trivia about Morgan Wallen

Things you probably didn't know about Morgan Wallen

Before fully committing to music, Morgan Wallen appeared on the TV competition show "The Voice" as the singer of a hard rock band; Adam Levine added him to his team, and he made it to the live playoffs.
As a child he took piano and violin lessons, an unusual instrumental background in contemporary country music.
His first record deal came after he co-wrote "Preachin' to the Choir," a song recorded by A Thousand Horses.
Wallen co-wrote "Up Down" with Hardy, then known as Michael Hardy, and the song featured Florida Georgia Line; he later joined the duo on several dates of their "Dig Your Roots" tour.
His album "Dangerous: The Double Album" features 30 songs across two discs, an exceptional length for a blockbuster country album.
In 2023, "One Thing at a Time" placed 35 of its 36 songs on the Hot Country Songs chart; it also simultaneously held the top nine spots on the ranking.
"Last Night" became his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 16 weeks at the top, a record for a song with no collaborations on that chart.
Although he is best known for country, he has recorded songs with hip-hop artists like Lil Durk and Drake, as well as collaborating with Post Malone.
The title "7 Summers" went viral before its official release: a snippet posted by Wallen broke the one-day streaming record for a country song on Spotify, according to reports at the time.
