In 1986, Chilean director Óscar Rodríguez put a contract on the table for a twenty-one-year-old singer who was just beginning to appear on television. He wanted her to star in the telenovela Ángel malo. She read the proposal, pictured the shoot with staged kisses, and turned down the role because the thought of forced intimacy in front of the set crew terrified her.

That refusal left the role in the hands of Carolina Arregui.

Myriam Hernández Navarro preferred to build her own drama, three minutes per audio track. Born in the Santiago neighborhood of Ñuñoa in 1965, she had been practicing looks and gestures since childhood in front of the bathroom mirror, with a hairbrush in her hand. When she appeared on the youth segments of Sábado gigante, nobody doubted her photogenic appeal, but she was clear that creative control had to come through her voice and not through the orders of a fictional director.

In 1988, she recorded her first self-titled album after convincing skeptical executives at the Chilean branch of EMI. The ballad El hombre que yo amo, written by Jorge Luis Piloto, played on Spanish-language radio stations with an unusual melodic intensity. The music video, shot in simple wardrobe among the dunes of Concón, set a direct visual archetype that Spanish-language television quickly adopted.

Dominating U.S. Radio

The industry's numbers soon confirmed the move. In 1990, the album Dos climbed to the top of Billboard's U.S. sales chart. It stayed eighteen consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Latin Pop Albums chart, a mark no solo artist from her country had come close to until then.

But her achievement wasn't limited to performing other people's songs. Hernández wrote the lyrics and music for Damage, a piece about marital betrayal that also reached No. 1 on the continental charts and that, years later, inspired tropical versions with enormous commercial appeal. So the Miami record labels understood that behind that teased hairstyle was a songwriter capable of gauging the pulse of commercial radio with surgical precision.

And the formula held up through the turn of the century.

In 1998, she recruited Humberto Gatica to produce Todo el amor in studios in Los Angeles. The album included Huele a peligro, written by Mexican composer Armando Manzanero, with orchestral arrangements surrounding a vocal performance recorded in almost a single microphone take to preserve the rawness of the pain.

The live performance at Quinta Vergara and the return to the mixing boards

Her relationship with the small screen found its true path as a host of major live shows. Between 2002 and 2006, she hosted the Viña del Mar International Song Festival, facing an amphitheater of fifteen thousand spectators who were hostile to any hesitation on air. There she learned to handle silences in front of international broadcast cameras, a skill she later combined with serving as a judge on talent contests on private channels.

Because the popular music business changed formats, and she never altered her roadmap. In 2022, the Latin Recording Academy presented her with the Grammy Award for Musical Excellence at a private ceremony in Las Vegas, recognizing a catalog that had already surpassed ten million physical copies sold.

That same year, she entered the studio with Jacobo Calderón to record the album Sinergia, a partnership she extended in 2024 with the release of Tauro under an independent production.

The album's ten tracks were recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, with a final analog mix on half-inch tape.
