Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr. was born in 1983, with a name that carries royal weight in the state of Andhra Pradesh. His grandfather was the most important actor in the history of Telugu cinema and also its chief minister. But good genes alone don't fill theaters.
In 1991, he debuted as a child actor in Brahmarshi Viswamitra under the direction of his own grandfather. That experience was a family formality before his first real opportunity as a leading man came in 2001 with Ninnu Choodalani. The result was a financial disaster that raised doubts about his ability to lead large-scale projects.
But success isn't an inheritance.
That's how, in 2001, a young director named S.S. Rajamouli trusted him with Student No.1. The film worked because it connected with a young audience looking for a different energy than the old guard. In 2003, with the release of Simhadri, the industry realized the young actor had a raw force reminiscent of the great myths of Indian action cinema.
During the first years of his career, he faced constant criticism over his physique and excess weight. In 2007, he decided to break away from that image for Yamadonga. He underwent strict training and lost more than 20 kilos in record time. That physical transformation changed his career path and opened the door to roles that demanded far greater choreographic agility.
Audiences show no mercy for stagnation.
Between 2010 and 2014, he went through a stretch of uneven box office with titles that never quite took off. In 2015, he changed his approach to acting with Temper, playing a corrupt cop with much darker shades than usual in his filmography. He dropped the exaggerated gestures to focus on a restraint that specialist critics didn't expect from a mass hero.
In 2022, the release of RRR marked his breakthrough with global audiences. His portrayal of Komaram Bheem required months of physical training and an emotional range that crossed borders beyond India. The film grossed more than 1,200 million rupees worldwide and put him on the radar of major international studios.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, the actor entered a new phase by joining Yash Raj Films' spy universe with the production War 2. The project marked his official entry into Bollywood, shot in Hindi after decades dominating the southern market. Filming required a technical setup of IMAX cameras at European locations and coordination with stunt specialists from three different countries.
In 2024, the production budget for Devara: Part 1 topped 300 million rupees and required massive water tanks for underwater action scenes shot entirely on sets in Hyderabad.
