Najwa Nimri has a gaze that has intimidated casting directors since 1995. Her debut in Salto al vacío was no accident of luck. Daniel Calparsoro chose her for the raw energy that fit the gritty cinema of the nineties.
That performance earned her her first comparisons to European actresses known for strong characters. But she wasn't chasing the quick fame of the commercial Spanish cinema of the era. She preferred projects that smelled of risk or wet asphalt.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1998, she released No Blood with Carlos Jean. The Najwajean project brought trip-hop onto the national sales charts. It was an unusual move, since the Spanish music industry still didn't understand electronic music outside avant-garde clubs.
That same year, she shot Los amantes del Círculo Polar. Julio Medem used her apparent coolness to build a story about fate and loss. The film earned notable box office numbers and put her on the international festival map.
During the first decade of the 2000s, she alternated solo albums with significant supporting roles. She never accepted projects just for the paycheck. She appeared in Sex and Lucía (2001) and later in Mataharis (2007) under the direction of Icíar Bollaín.
Her music career followed a parallel path that was just as demanding. In 2001 she released Carefully, and in 2003, Mayday. These were dark albums that didn't get radio airplay. But her fans filled concert venues in Madrid and Barcelona without any mass advertising.
The algorithm surrendered to her voice.
The arrival of Vis a Vis in 2015 marked a turning point in her career. Playing Zulema Zahir forced her to work at a frantic filming pace. The character became a mass phenomenon on social media before the series hit global streaming platforms.
In 2019, she joined the cast of La casa de papel. Her role as Inspector Alicia Sierra brought her massive worldwide exposure. The Netflix series broke audience records in countries such as Brazil, France and Italy.
Najwa Nimri manages her public image with almost surgical precision. She doesn't give empty interviews or play the gossip press game. In 2020, she released her album Viene de largo under her own record label to keep full creative control.
In 2022, she starred in Sagrada Familia for Netflix. Manolo Caro pulled her away from her usual villain roles and gave her a maternal, suffocating edge. She worked with the director again in the second season, which premiered in 2023.
She shot three major projects in 2024.
During 2024, she worked on the medical series Breathe, playing a firm-minded politician. She also premiered La virgen roja, directed by Paula Ortiz. In this film, she plays Aurora Rodríguez Carballeira, the woman who killed her own daughter Hildegart in the 1930s.
Her music projects are usually funded by her earnings from high-budget television fiction. Her current streaming contracts include strict confidentiality clauses and workdays that exceed ten hours on set.
