Nao Oikawa was born in Hiroshima in 1981, and her entry into the Japanese audiovisual industry did not follow the usual path of classical theater. In 2000, she began working under the Alice Japan label. But her ambition went beyond the limits of adult cinema of that era.
And the industry embraced her.
During her early years, she made dozens of titles that filled the shelves of Japanese video rental stores. But in 2004, she decided that this chapter had to end. It was not an easy decision, since the weight of prejudice in Japanese society is often a heavy burden to lift.
The year 2008 brought the break that any supporting actress in Japan hoped for. Oikawa landed the role of the villain Kegalesia in the series Engine Sentai Go-onger. That leather suit and her attitude on camera took her from a niche market into living rooms across the country.
That Toei Animation project ran for fifty episodes. It was demanding, physically intense work. But it led to spin-off films such as Engine Sentai Go-onger: Boom Boom! Bang Bang! GekijoBang!! and other franchise crossovers in 2010.
The contract was signed without much fanfare.
In 2009, she starred in Maid-Droid under the direction of Naoyuki Tomomatsu. This science fiction film aimed to showcase her physical image but with a pure genre script. She worked with tight budgets and shooting days that exceeded fifteen hours at studios in Tokyo.
Her personal life also drew attention in the Japanese society press. In 2014, she married shogi player Hiroshi Sugawara. But the relationship ended in divorce just a year later, in 2015. That personal setback did not slow her work on the theater stage (her true passion behind the cameras).
In 2018, she announced her second marriage through her personal blog. She chose to keep her husband's identity anonymous to protect his privacy. Oikawa soon learned that media exposure comes at a high cost to family stability outside the spotlight.
The gamble paid off.
She took part in the production of The High School Heroes in 2021, bringing back certain fantasy genre tropes that made her famous. In 2023, she worked on voice dubbing projects and kept up her presence at Super Sentai franchise events across Japan. During 2024, her schedule focused on stage performances in small venues in the Shinjuku district.
The production of her latest videoblog in May 2024 had an operating cost of 150,000 yen.
