Naomi Ackie was born in Walthamstow in 1992. She grew up in a family with roots in Granada and spent her teenage years in East London before enrolling at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Her training there was technical and disciplined.
She made her TV debut with a small role in Doctor Who in 2015. But it was her stage work that caught the attention of casting directors. Ackie wasn't chasing quick fame.
Her real breakthrough came with Lady Macbeth in 2016.
In that film, she played Anna, a maid who bears the weight of racial and class oppression in rural England. Her performance was restrained and understated. She won the Breakthrough Actress award at the British Independent Film Awards, and the British industry recognized that she had a physical presence that was hard to ignore.
In 2019, she joined the universe of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to play Jannah. It was a massive production with a budget of $275 million. Ackie had to learn to ride horses and handle weapons during shoots that lasted months under the Jordanian sun.
And the leap didn't throw her off.
After science fiction, she returned to psychological drama with the second season of The End of the F***ing World. Her character, Bonnie, was a wounded, obsessive woman who demanded an exhausting emotional range. Critics praised her ability to hold silence without losing the tension of the scene.
In 2022, she took on the challenge of playing Whitney Houston in the biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody. She worked with vocal and movement coaches for almost a year to mimic the singer's gestures. The film grossed 60 million dollars worldwide and proved she could carry the weight of a major blockbuster on her shoulders.
Ackie decided to move away from traditional biopics to explore darker territory. In 2024, she starred in Blink Twice, the directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz. The film was shot in Mexico and its plot explored abuses of power in settings of extreme luxury.
Taking risks is what drives her.
In 2025, she joined the cast of Mickey 17, the ambitious science fiction film directed by Bong Joon-ho. She shared the screen with Robert Pattinson and Toni Collette in a story about space colonization and human mortality. The project had an estimated budget of 150 million dollars.
The production of Mickey 17 suffered several technical delays due to the complexity of the visual effects and post-production in South Korea.
