Natasha Richardson was born in 1963 under the weight of three generations of actors. She was no ordinary debutante. Her mother was Vanessa Redgrave and her father was director Tony Richardson. But she decided that the London stage would be her first real battleground, without asking her family tree for permission.
The family name was no guarantee of work.
In 1986, she played Mary Shelley in the film Gothic under the direction of Ken Russell. It was a physical, dark role that moved her away from the refined heiress image the British press tried to pin on her. Richardson was drawn to complex characters with rough edges, not simple period portraits.
Before crossing over to the United States, she worked on productions that tested her emotional endurance. In 1988, she stepped into the role of the kidnapped heiress in Patty Hearst. Director Paul Schrader had her spend much of the shoot with her eyes blindfolded to add realism. And the gamble paid off.
During the filming of Nell in 1994, she met Liam Neeson. The chemistry between them carried over onto the screen, and they married that same year in a private ceremony. But her personal life never overshadowed her professional ambitions in the New York theater, where she truly felt at home.
In 1998, she won the Tony Award for her performance as Sally Bowles in the revival of Cabaret. Sam Mendes directed that raw, decadent version, which broke with the clean aesthetic of earlier adaptations. Richardson sang with a broken voice that conveyed the despair of interwar Berlin.
Nearly a million moviegoers saw her name on Broadway marquees during that season.
Despite her success on stage, the general public knows her best for Tú a Londres y yo a California in 1998. She played Elizabeth James in a Disney production that grossed more than $90 million worldwide. It was flawless technical work, handling light comedy with the same precision as Shakespearean drama.
And she made it happen.
Richardson's career was always tied to a careful selection of scripts. In 2005, she worked alongside Ralph Fiennes in The Countess. It was a James Ivory project that demanded absolute restraint in every shot. Still, the industry was beginning to see her as a prestige actress who preferred quality over a high volume of releases.
On March 16, 2009, the actress fell while taking a beginner's skiing lesson at the Mont Tremblant resort. She was not wearing a helmet. At first the incident seemed minor, and she herself declined initial medical assistance, insisting she was perfectly fine.
Two hours later, a severe headache forced her urgent transfer. The final medical diagnosis confirmed an epidural hematoma caused by a lateral impact to the skull. She died on March 18, 2009 at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York after being taken off life support.
The autopsy report stated that the trauma caused massive internal bleeding in the space between the skull and the lining of the brain.
