Nathan Crowley doesn't design sets. He builds them from the foundation of an architect who prefers concrete to pixels. His entry into the film industry was anything but glamorous, but it taught him that physical space dictates the rhythm of a scene.
In 2002, he met Christopher Nolan while working on Insomnia. It was the start of a technical collaboration that has shaped the look of large-scale cinema for two decades. Crowley believes that if an actor can touch the wall, the result on screen will always be better than any green screen.
Cardboard sets are not part of his plans.
During pre-production of Batman Begins in 2005, he locked himself in Christopher Nolan's garage to sculpt models. He wasn't looking for a comic-book Gothic city but a brutalist metropolis that would feel suffocating and real. Because for Crowley, architecture should hurt, or at least feel heavy on the viewer's shoulders.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2008, he took that philosophy to the extreme with The Dark Knight. For Batman's headquarters, he used an open-plan space with a ceiling of fluorescent lights that forced the scene to be lit in a naturalistic way. That clean, cold space broke with the tradition of the dark, damp caves of earlier versions.
But his work isn't limited to putting up walls. On The Prestige in 2006, he showed that he could manipulate the Victorian era and turn it into a visual puzzle. His designs for Tesla's laboratories in the film blended industrial archaeology with a futuristic vision that avoided unnecessary ornament.
On the set of Interstellar in 2014, he insisted on building the spacecraft cabins in full. The actors saw real projections of the stars through the windows instead of tracking screens. As a result, the crew's reactions to the immensity of the cosmos were authentic and not the product of imagination.
Crowley firmly believes that production design is an engineering of perception. For Dunkirk in 2017, he rebuilt the original pier on the French beach to support the weight of hundreds of extras and camera crews. He endured real storms and the lashing of the sea, while most designers would have opted for a water tank in a London studio.
After the success of Tenet in 2020, he sought new challenges outside speculative science fiction. In 2018, he had already worked with Damien Chazelle on First Man, where he used original NASA capsules to recreate the claustrophobia of lunar missions. The budget went to technical precision rather than digital effects.
His leap into fantasy cinema with Wonka in 2023 surprised those who considered him a strictly realistic designer. But he applied the same logic of massive construction. He designed an imaginary European city that blended the styles of half a dozen countries so the chocolate factory wouldn't feel like a fantasy place but like a real, specific destination.
In 2024, he served as production designer on Wicked. For this adaptation, he built a massive set that included a field of real tulips planted months before the cameras arrived. The production of this work was split into two parts to manage an unprecedented volume of physical construction in today's industry.
He has a total of six Oscar nominations without ever having gone on stage to collect the statuette. In 2025, he finished the post-production work on the second installment of the saga set in the world of Oz.
