Santiago de los Caballeros, late 1990s. Natalia Alexandra Gutiérrez Batista spent her afternoons at the School of Fine Arts memorizing choral scores while secretly listening to hip hop cassettes that arrived from the United States. Years later, in a freezing apartment in the Bronx, she recorded demos against the clock in amateur engineers' home studios.
Nobody handed her a single contact.
Don Omar heard her by chance in a New York hallway in 2010. That chance meeting led to Dutty Love, a collaboration recorded in just a few takes that dominated Latin radio and won three Billboard awards in 2013. But the success was short-lived: the label run by Don Omar shut down its operations shortly afterward, and Natalia's phone went quiet for nearly three years.
For a woman in reggaeton in the early 2010s, the doors weren't just closed, they were bolted shut. Natti Natasha had to rebuild her career from scratch in Puerto Rico, spending entire weeks in waiting rooms in San Juan not knowing whether she would be allowed to record a thirty-second vocal track.
The tide turned in her favor when she teamed up with producer Raphy Pina and recorded Criminal with Ozuna in 2017. The music video passed one billion YouTube views in just five months, outperforming English-language releases from that same season in direct metrics.
And the industry had to swallow its pride.
Then came Sin Pijama in 2018, recorded with Becky G, and her debut studio album, ilumiNATTI, released in February 2019. By then she was no longer the guest singer fixing someone else's chorus, but the owner of a repertoire precisely engineered to dominate radio and beat the algorithms.
Her move into executive production came when she took over the series Bravas in 2020 for YouTube Originals. The eight-episode drama unflinchingly portrayed the precarity and structural barriers facing young women artists in the marginalized neighborhoods of Puerto Rico.
In November 2021, she opened the archives of her private life with the nonfiction series Everybody Loves Natti on Amazon Prime Video. Split into six half-hour episodes, the show exposed the commercial machinery behind her career while she worked through a complicated pregnancy alongside recording her album Nattividad.
In May 2022, the federal court in Hato Rey sentenced her partner and manager to 41 months in prison for illegal possession of firearms. Many predicted a forced halt to her projects, but she shielded her own company, took over the business side of her tours and kept her release dates intact.
In December 2023 she released her third album, Nasty Singles, a 16-track compilation recorded between Miami and San Juan that racked up over half a billion combined streams in its first six months of distribution. The album's final masters were completed at The Hit Factory Criteria studios with four credited sound engineers on staff.
