Nava Mau sat down at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles in September 2024 as the first Latina trans woman nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress. It was not a path planned since childhood, nor an acting-school ambition. Before stepping onto a red carpet, she spent years in the legal sector and in human rights advocacy in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Born in Mexico City in 1992, she grew up in San Antonio, Texas. That duality shaped the way she understood fiction. She studied Linguistics and Psychology at Pomona College, where she began to realize that the stories she wanted to see had never been written. So she decided to create them herself.
In 2019, she produced, directed and starred in the short film Waking Hour. It was a small but essential production for understanding her cinematic vision. In that story, she explored the vulnerability of a trans woman on a first date without resorting to cheap drama.
And it worked.
That work caught the attention of HBO Max's casting directors. In 2021, she played Ana in Generation. The project barely lasted one season on air. But it taught her how the major leagues of American television work and the weight of authentic representation on screen.
Richard Gadd chose her to play Teri in Baby Reindeer in 2024. The series became a global streaming phenomenon on Netflix for months. Mau played a therapist who becomes the only anchor of sanity for the stalked protagonist.
Teri was not a cliché.
Her performance stood out for its dryness and lack of artifice. She made audiences focus on the emotional exhaustion of a woman who simply tries to love someone broken. The shoot in London was grueling due to the psychological weight of the script and the long rehearsal days beforehand.
In 2025, her casting in the second season of The Last of Us for HBO was announced. It is a major step up in technical scale for her career. The production has budgets that exceed ten million dollars per episode.
Mau continues her work as a cultural consultant for scripts that address diversity. Before filming, she reads the script with the eye of a social analyst. And although the industry wants her in front of the camera, she keeps developing projects as an independent screenwriter.
Her contract for Craig Mazin's series includes strict confidentiality clauses until the day of the premiere.
