Nicholas Turturro was working at the St. Regis hotel in New York when luck came knocking. He wasn't desperately seeking fame or spending his days at grueling casting calls. But his brother John was already in the industry, which made access to certain closed independent film circles easier.
Spike Lee gave him his first break in Do the Right Thing in 1989. It was a small part, just a few lines, but it showed that his face fit perfectly into the urban cinema of the late eighties.
It worked out better than expected.
That debut opened the door to another collaboration with Lee in Mo' Better Blues in 1990. Nicholas didn't try to compete with the charisma of the leads. He simply showed up and brought a jittery energy that was typical of the Queens neighborhoods where he grew up.
In 1993, he landed the role that defined his income for nearly a decade. James Martinez in NYPD Blue was a supporting character who eventually carved out a space of his own thanks to his natural style. The ABC series needed that Italian-American counterpoint, which the actor handled effortlessly.
He received two Emmy nominations for this work. Seven seasons and more than 160 episodes reflect a consistency that few supporting actors achieve on American television. Nicholas understood early on that being a reliable supporting player was far more profitable than being a short-lived leading man.
And the audience embraced him as one of their own.
But television can be a golden cage. In 2000, he decided to leave the series to try his luck in other formats. He shot the TV movie The Thin Blue Lie and took part in minor projects that didn't have the impact he hoped for at the international box office.
It's impossible to analyze his career without mentioning the family name. But Nicholas never tried to imitate the intellectual or eccentric style of his older brother. He preferred the grit and working-class characters. In 2005, he took part in The Longest Yard alongside Adam Sandler and proved that physical comedy didn't scare him at all.
Sometimes relative anonymity is the best retirement plan.
He regularly worked with the production company Happy Madison. He appeared in I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry in 2007 and in Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 in 2015. These were paycheck roles that allowed him to maintain his standing in the actors' union without the pressures of the tabloid press.
His return to constant police drama came in 2010. He joined the cast of Blue Bloods to play Sergeant Anthony Renzulli. On this CBS production, he regained the dry tone he had perfected years earlier. He left the series in 2016 after appearing in 91 episodes to seek projects with a lighter annual shooting schedule.
In 2023, he appeared in the film The Ritual Killer as Detective Mario Gaeta. That same year, he also appeared in two episodes of the series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit playing Felice Boatman. His official filmography exceeds 100 titles across film and television.
In 2024, his schedule included the independent production The Comeback, shot on location in New Jersey with a budget of less than five million dollars.
