Nobunaga Shimazaki wasn't seeking the spotlight when he joined the Aoni Production academy. In 2009, he landed his first minor roles and simply watched how the veterans worked in the studio. But his voice had an unusual clarity that fit perfectly with the demands of the anime industry at that time.
And then the water came.
In 2013, his career changed completely when he played Haruka Nanase in Free!. This role as an introverted swimmer earned him the Best Newcomer Actor award at the 7th Seiyuu Awards. It was a success built on restraint and on conveying emotion with very few words.
That year, the specialized press began to take notice of his ability to carry the weight of a production without having to shout. Shimazaki understands that silence in Japanese dubbing is just as important as dialogue. So he started choosing projects where subtext was the priority.
Many actors settle into the high school protagonist type because it's a safe and profitable niche. Shimazaki preferred to take risks with characters bordering on mental instability or total coldness. In 2019, he took on the role of voicing Yuki Sohma in the new version of Fruits Basket.
But the real breakthrough came a little later.
In 2020, he took on the role of Mahito in Jujutsu Kaisen. Here he left warmth behind to explore a sadistic, playful register that deliberately unsettled viewers. That performance was key to winning the Best Supporting Actor award at the national voice acting awards in 2021.
The Japanese industry values technical precision over empty charisma.
In 2022, he returned to sports anime with Blue Lock, voicing Seishiro Nagi. The challenge here was different, since he had to sound lazy yet deadly at the same time. He made the character's lack of energy anything but flat for the audience, and he sustained that tension throughout the entire season.
His ability to move from the epic tone of Black Clover, playing Yuno, to the rawer style of Baki Hanma defines his current working method. It's not just about acting but about understanding the acoustics of each recording studio. Every microphone requires a different distance depending on the intensity of the scream or whisper the script calls for.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, he worked on the series Wind Breaker, bringing Hayato Suo to life. For this project, recording sessions were held in four-hour blocks with barely any breaks between action takes. The production required a temporary exclusivity contract that limited his public appearances during that semester of work in the booth.
The audio post-production budget for his latest works in 2025 exceeded the standard levels of the Japanese industry. The final contract with the distributor was closed under a strict confidentiality clause covering the main cast's salaries.
