Ólafur Darri Ólafsson was born in the United States in 1975 because his father was studying medicine there. But his identity is purely Icelandic. He returned to Reykjavik at age four and grew up in an environment where his build, nearly two meters tall and visibly powerful, shaped the roles offered to him. At first they were supporting characters or menacing figures.
That's because the training system in Iceland is small and demanding. He graduated from the Icelandic Drama School in 1998. Instead of waiting for a call that never came, he decided to build his own creative structure.
He co-founded the company Vesturport alongside other key names in the Nordic scene.
Theater was his testing ground.
With this company he took productions such as Woyzeck and Metamorphosis around half the world. He acted in London and New York long before Hollywood learned how to pronounce his name. In 2006 he appeared in Children, a film that explored the harshness of family relationships in Reykjavik. It earned him his first serious recognition at the Edda Awards in his home country.
In 2013 Ben Stiller was looking for an actor who could play a drunk helicopter pilot in Greenland. He needed someone who seemed capable of surviving a shipwreck and who also had a dry comedic touch. Ólafur Darri landed the role in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and his scene singing in a bar became the most memorable moment of the film.
But the real breakthrough came on television. In 2015, the series Trapped put him at the center of a criminal investigation in a town cut off by snow. His character, Andri Olafsson, broke with the athletic, tormented detective typical of the genre.
Her face became global.
The series was a massive export hit. It sold rights to the BBC and broadcasters across Europe. Offers then began arriving from offices that had never even known where Iceland was on the map. He appeared in the first season of True Detective and lent his voice and presence to The BFG by Steven Spielberg in 2016.
He didn't just wait for scripts in front of the camera. In 2020 he premiered The Minister, a series in which he played an Icelandic prime minister with bipolar disorder. On this project he also worked as executive producer to keep control of the story's tone. He wanted to avoid easy shortcuts about mental illness.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2022 he joined the cast of Severance, the Apple TV+ series directed by Ben Stiller. His role as Dale in the mysterious setting of the Lumon Industries offices let him play with absolute restraint. Ólafur Darri is an actor who works better from silence than from shouting.
Despite his international schedule, he keeps his base of operations in Reykjavik. In 2024 he worked on the production of A Minecraft Movie alongside Jason Momoa and Jack Black. Filming for this big-budget movie took place mainly in New Zealand over several months that same year.
In 2025 he took part in filming the second season of Severance under a strict confidentiality agreement.
