Oliver Jackson-Cohen was born in 1986 into a family where fashion was everywhere. His mother is designer Betty Jackson. But young Oliver decided his path was on stage, not in the family sewing workshop.
In 2007, he landed a brief role in the series Hollyoaks. It was an experience lasting only a few weeks that gave him a behind-the-scenes look at how a professional shoot works. Although the character didn't have much depth, it led him to drop his French studies at university.
The climb to success was not immediate.
For years he took on minor projects in the United States and the United Kingdom. He shot the romantic comedy Going the Distance in 2010 and shared the screen with Dwayne Johnson in Faster that same year. But studios still weren't quite sure where to place his six-foot-three frame and his intense gaze.
His luck changed in 2018 when Mike Flanagan cast him as Luke Crain. In The Haunting of Hill House, he played a man broken by addiction and childhood trauma. That role required him to lose weight and immerse himself in a physical darkness that moved him away from the traditional leading-man label.
Horror was his ticket back.
Flanagan worked with him again in 2020 for The Haunting of Bly Manor. This time he traded vulnerability for the manipulation of Peter Quint. And that same year came his commercial breakthrough with the new version of The Invisible Man produced by Blumhouse.
In that movie, he barely appears on screen during the opening stretch. But his presence is felt in every frame through the fear he projects Elisabeth Moss. The film grossed more than 144 million dollars on a budget of just 7 million.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2022, he starred in the series Surface for Apple TV+. Here he played a suspicious husband caught up in a plot of amnesia and marital secrets. Jackson-Cohen seems to have found a niche in celebrities who hide something behind a facade of British perfection.
He shot the miniseries Wilderness in 2023 alongside Jenna Coleman. The story was filmed on locations in the United States and Canada to tell a tale of revenge set amid national parks. In this production, he played Will, a man whose infidelity sets off a spiral of psychological violence.
For the feature film Jackdaw in 2023, he had to learn to ride motorcycles in extreme weather conditions. The shoot took place entirely in northeast England. The production lasted exactly 22 days of intensive work under the direction of Jamie Childs.
Jackson-Cohen plays a former motocross champion turned criminal out of necessity. It's a physical role that skips long dialogue to focus on pure action. The film premiered at the Fantastic Fest in Austin before reaching British commercial cinemas.
The international distribution deal for this project was closed for a figure that was not disclosed to the trade press.
