Óscar Isaac arrived in New York in 2001 with a suitcase and the nerve of someone who had already played dive bars in Miami. Before getting into the prestigious Juilliard School, this Guatemalan raised in Florida made a living with a punk ska band called The Blinking Underdogs. His father was a Cuban doctor with iron discipline, and his mother was devoted to religion, but he preferred dark stages and the noise of electric guitars.
Music was never a plan B.
In 2005, he finished his acting studies and began landing supporting roles, where his Latino background often typecast him as a sidekick. He worked with Ridley Scott on Robin Hood in 2010 and appeared in Sucker Punch in 2011. These were paycheck jobs that never fully tapped his dramatic range. Then everything changed when the Coen brothers put out a casting call for an actor who could really play guitar and had the air of a melancholy loser.
To land the role in Inside Llewyn Davis in 2013, Isaac had to compete with professional musicians and top-tier actors. The Coens weren't looking for someone who would pretend to play, but for someone who could sustain a single long take performing sixties folk without edits. Isaac recorded all the songs live during filming, and that technical honesty earned him his first Golden Globe nomination.
And the gamble paid off.
From that moment on, his name stopped being that of a supporting actor and began leading risky projects. In 2014, he starred in A Most Violent Year alongside Jessica Chastain, playing a businessman trying to keep his ethics in a corrupt, icy New York. That same year he appeared in Ex Machina by Alex Garland. His improvised dance in that sci-fi film went viral years later, but at the time it was a risky bet on low-budget auteur cinema.
The leap to big-budget blockbusters wasn't an easy decision for someone trained in classical theater. In 2015 he accepted the role of Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens after a talk with J.J. Abrams. His character was supposed to die in the original script, but the director chose to keep him alive because of the chemistry he had on screen. He earned a multimillion-dollar fee for taking part in the trilogy, but he always kept a critical distance from the Hollywood studio system.
But Isaac needed to return to broken characters.
In 2021, he returned to television with Scenes from a Marriage for HBO. It was an grueling shoot lasting just a few weeks, with dialogue so dense that the actors finished each day physically exhausted. That same year he played Duke Leto Atreides in Dune under the direction of Denis Villeneuve. On this production, his armor design weighed more than fifteen kilos and restricted his movement in the dune scenes shot in Jordan.
In 2022, he took on the Marvel challenge with Moon Knight for Disney Plus. He played a man with dissociative identity disorder and had to develop two distinct accents to tell his main characters apart. It was one of the rare times an actor of his stature demanded a short contract so he wouldn't get trapped in a franchise for a whole decade. Because Isaac values his time in New York theater far more than the red carpets of Los Angeles.
By 2025, Frankenstein is set for release, directed by Guillermo del Toro, in which he plays Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Filming took place mainly in locations in Scotland and Toronto, with a production design that avoided green screens as much as possible. The film's budget exceeded 85 million dollars, according to industry estimates in Ontario.
